Shirley Van Andel Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 19, 2024.
Shirley Ann (Cagley) Van Andel was born 11/27/1925 to Marion and Bernice (Cushing) Cagley on the family farm near Ionia, Iowa. Died 1/14/2024 in Denver, Colorado.
Shirley was the second of seven siblings. She grew up on the family farm near Ionia, Iowa and graduated from Ionia High School in 1943. Shortly afterwards, she left to train as a teletype operator with Western Union in Sioux City. That job would take her to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and then to Chicago where she would meet her future husband, John, while attending the North Shore Church.
Married life began in a small Chicago apartment, but they eventually moved to Denver, Colorado where they would spend well over seventy years. There, she worked as a homemaker and as a teletype operator for Montgomery Ward and for the Gates Corporation.
After retiring, she and John enjoyed a great deal of travel while continuing their involvement with their family, friends, and church.
She was preceded in death by her husband on December 19, 2017. She then moved to Holly Creek Retirement Community where she enjoyed her last five years living, making new friends, and receiving all the loving care given to her as she aged.
Shirley was also preceded in death by her parents, siblings: Robert Cagley, Gwen (Leslie) Schroeder, Barbara (Jerry) Meyers, Maxine Cagley, Charlotte (Don) Markle, and nephew Leslie Schroeder. She is survived by her brother, Marion (Esther) Cagley; sons, Wayne (Rebecca) and Roger (Pam); grandchildren, Aaron and Audra; along with 15 nieces and nephews.
