Mrs. Shirley Ann Varn, 83, of Walterboro, entered into rest Friday afternoon, November 28, 2025, at her residence. She was the loving wife of the late Mr. Grady Matthew “Grits” Varn, Sr.
Born July 7, 1942, in Walterboro, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Samuel M. Barnes and the late Roberta Headden Barnes. She was a devoted homemaker, who constantly centered her life around those she loved as well as the countless children she became “Nana” to as their babysitter. She will always be remembered for her love of plants as well as the love she possessed for playing bingo and thrift shopping.
Surviving are: three children, Matt Varn and his wife Tammy of Round O, Rodney Varn and his wife Kimberly of Walterboro, and Stacey Varn Williams of Walterboro; a brother, Sammie Barnes; a sister, Caroline Barnes; nine grandchildren, Jay McCollum, Josh McCollum, Kyle McCollum, Heather Varn Benoist, Haley Varn, Shane Varn, Taylor Varn, Hunter Williams, Kaylee Williams, Wesley Bryan, and Julie Bryan; four great grandchildren, Emmalynn, Jaxson, Ellison, and Noah; and a sister-in-law, Paulette Barnes. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Ruth Anne Varn; and a brother, Jackie Barnes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o’clock Friday morning, December 5, 2025, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery, Jefferies Highway, Walterboro.
