Shirley Dean Veal

Mrs. Shirley Dean Brooks Veal, age 87, of LaGrange, passed away on January 2, 2024. Mrs. Veal was born on April 15, 1936 in LaGrange to the late John D. Brooks, Sr. and Florence Lynch Brooks. Her mother passed away at an early age, and she was raised by her stepmother, Fannie Brooks. Living in LaGrange her entire life, she was a member of the Gray Hill Baptist Church for over fifty years, serving as Church Clerk and a Sunday School Teacher for most of those years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Ernest Veal.
Survivors include her son, Jeffrey Ernest Veal and his wife Kathy and her daughter, Priscilla Dean Veal, and Deborah Florence Johnson (Jerry); brothers, John D. Brooks, Jr. (Rochelle) and Lamar Brooks (Glenda); sister, Ann Hudson; grandchildren, Joseph Johnson, Heather Cogan, Kallie Veal and Elizabeth Batchelor (Will); great-grandchildren, Brittany, Katelyn, Steven, Clayton and Sierra; four great-great-grandchildren and extended family.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter Allen Myhand Chapel with Pastor Lamar Womack officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens. The family will have a time of visitation on Friday at the funeral home, beginning at 1:00 pm and lasting until the service hour.
