Shirley Walker Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heer Mortuaries & Crematory - Fort Morgan on Feb. 18, 2025.
Shirley Walker died at her home on February 14, 2025. She was born on November 17, 1943, in Fort Morgan to Agnes and Harold Frost. She joined her older brothers, Wayne and Leland, on the family farm south of Fort Morgan.
After the passing of her brothers, Shirley took on all the duties of a ranch kid-milking cows, doing chores, and caring for the animals. Her favorite part was working with the horses, especially her beloved Morgan Cross.
Shirley eventually left the farm and became a cosmetologist; a skill she carried with her for life-still cutting hair for family well into her 70s.
Shirley was a mom to everyone and everything. When Earl got sick, she worked nights to support the family, spent her days driving him to appointments, and still had dinner on the table for her hungry pack of boys. It wasn't unusual for her to say, "Move the carburetor off the table so we can eat!"
Later, Shirley adopted April Winters, her only daughter, completing her family.
In 1991, she moved back to Wiggins to care for her mother. Together, they raised cows, chickens, grandkids, and whatever else happened by.
Shirley also drove a school bus and loved seeing her "kids" all grown up in the grocery store, always recognizing them with a warm smile and a hug.
There were a few things you could always count on with Shirley. There was always coffee on the stove, a seat at the table, and an open-door welcome. Dinner was served at 12 sharp on Sundays-you damn well better be on time. There was always a lap to sit in or a shoulder to snuggle for the grandkids. That didn't change much as they got older. They may not have sat on her lap anymore, but they still brought her their troubles, and in her gentle, kind way, she listened and helped them find a way forward.
Shirley loved her garden and flowers. When it got hard to get to the ground, she found old water troughs and sprinkler pipes to plant things at her height. She and April spent countless summer hours in the garden.
Shirley loved reading. She always had a new mystery novel and often shared books with the kids and grandkids and was always learning something new.
She preserved family traditions, keeping her mother's recipes and canning her own sauerkraut and garden vegetables-a skill passed down through generations.
She loved sitting in her kitchen, looking out the big window, watching the birds, dogs, and cats play in the yard. Shirley was always busy, crocheting blankets for the kids, making potholders, and weaving. She was always resourceful, even before upcycling was trendy. She made rugs and trivets out of old T-shirts and wove outdoor mats out of used baling twine. Always an artist at heart, Shirley was always painting something. She painted saw blades, canvases, clocks, and even cabinet doors. Her talents ran deep but never as deep as her love for her family.
Shirley's love extended beyond her immediate family-her nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews always knew they had a place at Aunt Shirley's. Every year, at least one of them made a special trip just to visit her.
She always had a kind word and made time for the people who mattered. Shirley lived a life full of love, hard work, and quiet strength. She never sought recognition, yet she made the world brighter for everyone around her. Her door was always open, her kitchen always warm, and her love was limitless. She leaves behind a family that will carry forward her resilience, kindness, and unwavering heart. Shirley's legacy will live on-not just in the gardens she planted or the things she created, but in the people, she loved so well.
She is survived by her sons, Loren (Tina) Walker of Fort Morgan, Leland (Crystal) of Hoyt, Lane (Tammy) Walker, Landre (Jodi) Walker, and April Winters, all of Wiggins, and Tony (Terry) Behrends of Fort Morgan. There are 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Walker, her parents, Agnes and Harold Frost, and her brothers, Wayne and Leland.
Graveside services will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Fort Morgan on Friday, February 21st at 2:00 PM.
A luncheon and celebration of life will be held at Fort Morgan Fire Station #2 on Burlington Ave. in Fort Morgan, following the burial.
