Sidney Pope Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sidney R. Pope, a cherished member of the McKeesport community. Born on December 26, 1938, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Thomas and Bertha (Walbaum) Pope and the husband of the late Janice Marie (Galeza) Pope.
Sidney dedicated his life to serving others through his work at United States Steel and PAKCO, as a bricklayer. He also worked at First Student, where he found joy in caring for children and offering them valuable life advice.
As a proud Army veteran who served in Germany during the Vietnam War, Sidney embodied a strong sense of duty and honor. His commitment to his country was matched only by his dedication to his family and community. Sidney was deeply involved with the McKeesport Baseball Association, where he enjoyed mentoring young players and instilling in them the values of teamwork and perseverance.
An avid outdoorsman, Sidney found solace in hunting and fishing, surrounded by the beauty of nature. He was a lover of pets, leaving behind his beloved cats, Nebby and Chyra, who brought him comfort and joy in his final years.
Sidney is survived by his loving sons, Dean and David, his grandson Darren, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family members who will carry on his legacy of kindness and compassion. In addition to his wife and parents, Sidney was also preceded in death by his siblings, Thomas, Harry "Ducky," and Sandra.
Family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, May 30, 2024, from 2 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, at 10:00 a.m., in the funeral home chapel. Committal prayers, military honors, and burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
Sidney's life and legacy, let us remember the profound impact he had on all those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his spirit live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
