Silverio Mazzella Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Westchester Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 9, 2026.
Silverio Michael Mazzella, lovingly known as "Sam" or "Sammy," passed away at the age of 85. He was born on April 29, 1940, and lived a life defined by family, hard work, and a deep love for the sea.

Sam was the beloved husband of Diane Mazzella and a devoted father to Paul and Danielle. He was preceded in death by his cherished eldest son, Phillip ("Phil"), who passed away in 2022. Sam carried an enduring love for Phil in his heart, and the bond they shared remained one of the most meaningful parts of his life.

Sam was also a proud and devoted grandfather to six grandchildren: William, Jonathan, Gerard, Paul, Marco, and Alexandria. His family was his greatest joy and proudest accomplishment, and he spoke about them constantly-always boasting, always smiling, and always ready to share a story or a photo with anyone who would listen.

Sam worked for many years as an Operating Engineer while also dedicating himself to construction. He was known for his strong work ethic and the pride he took in building-both professionally and in the life he created for his family.

As a young boy, Sam moved to City Island with his family, where he grew up surrounded by the water he would come to love so deeply.

From an early age, Sam was drawn to salt water and boats. He spent countless hours on the water with his father and brothers, a passion that only grew stronger with time. He eventually fulfilled his dream of living on the water, with breathtaking views of the water and New York City.

One of Sam's greatest joys was simply being home-sitting outside and taking in the beautiful views of the water, listening to the gentle sound of the waves, and breathing in the fresh smell of salt air. It was his happiest place, and where he felt most at peace.

You would often find Sam out on his beloved boat, Tranquility, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandkids. Weekend after weekend, they explored the shores together, making summertime memories that will last forever-staying out until the evening hours with laughter, love, and the sun setting over the water.

Sam was a well-known staple of City Island-from boating to building-and he was loved by many. He had a jovial spirit, a contagious smile, and a way of making people laugh wherever he went. His warmth and presence filled every room, and his love for his family was unconditional and unmistakable.

Sam will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in the family he cherished, and the countless memories made with those he loved.
