William Anthony "Bill" Mazzella

Preston - William Anthony Mazzella, affectionately known as "Bill" or "WAM," passed away peacefully at home Nov. 26, 2025, in Preston. He was born Sept. 26, 1954, in New London, to Augustine and Evelyn (Maskell) Mazzella. Bill was the second of seven children raised in Ledyard.

After graduating from high school, Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as part of a mobile air defense unit stationed in Germany.

Following his military service, he built a successful career as a detail-oriented carpenter for over 30 years, retiring from Mattern Construction.

In 1982, Bill married Ann (Mattern), and together they raised two children, Justin and Shannon; and he later shared a strong bond with son-in-law Josh.

He was a devoted Papa to his grandchildren: Connor, Henry, Johnny and Michele, who brought immense joy to his life. Bill was a beloved uncle to more than 20 nieces and nephews; and maintained close bonds with extended family throughout his life.

A lifelong Harley-Davidson enthusiast, he found freedom and camaraderie on the open road. For 38 years, Bill was a dedicated member of the recovery community as a Friend of Bill W., offering guidance and support to countless newcomers on their path to sobriety. His compassion and commitment left a lasting impact on many lives.

Bill is survived by his wife Ann; son Justin and partner Elizabeth (Brown) of Bozrah; daughter Shannon and her husband Josh Pupa; grandchildren: Connor, Henry, Johnny and Michele of Griswold; as well as siblings: Joan Greene of Canterbury, Kathy Menghi of Dayville, Cindy and Jim Tuttle of North Stonington, Sandy and Edgar Smith of Gales Ferry, Sue and Phil Davis of Preston, and Bob and Lisa Mazzella of North Stonington.

A memorial service will be held at the family's convenience with details to be announced soon.
