Gednetz-Ruzek-Brown Funeral Home & Cremation ServiceJames H. "Smitty" Schmitz, 88, of Diamond, Ohio passed away peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at his home. He was born on January 5, 1938 the son of the late Lawton and Mary Schmitz. Many knew him as a "Jack of all trades" because he loved to work on many projects at one time. However, his family was the most important part of his life, especially if they went out to eat. Smitty retired from the United Telephone Company.
He is survived by his wife Lela "Lee" (Krites) whom he married June 9, 1956. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this coming June. He is also survived by his children; Pamela Dray, Cheryl (Tim) O'Connor, son-in-law Tim Nicholson, 11 grandchildren; Daniel (Penny) Myers, Jeannie Myers, Kelli (Scott) Simmons, Kati (Kevin) Dysert, Daniel Myers III, Richard Myers and 9 great grandchildren; Halona, Madison, Morgan, Megan, Michael, Jace, Lily, Rylee and Emma as well as 1 Great Great Grandchild. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, his children; Kathy Nicholson, Timothy Schmitz, and son-in-laws Michael Crowder and David Dray.
A Memorial service will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026 at Brown Funeral Home, Sebring Chapel at 4:00 PM with Pastor Lynn Moore officiating. A time of visitation will be held the hour prior to the service from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Memorial contributions can be made in Smitty's honor to the Edinburg United Church of Christ, 4081 Rock Spring Rd. Ravenna, OH 44266. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, Sebring (330) 938-2526, www.grfuneralhome.com.
