Socrates H. Garfias, born on October 21, 1953, in Tamaulipas, Mexico, passed away on November 14, 2025, leaving behind a legacy defined by devotion, humility, and unwavering love for his family and community. Throughout his life, Socrates was admired for his warm presence, steady strength, and the quiet kindness he extended to everyone around him.
For more than thirty years, he worked in construction, a profession he embraced with pride and purpose. His dedication can be seen throughout Laredo. Socrates helped build the current courthouse, contributed to the early construction of TAMIU during its expansion in the 1990s, and worked on several of Laredo’s high schools. Through these projects, he helped shape the city he loved while teaching those around him the importance of hard work, perseverance, and integrity. He retired at the age of sixty-eight after decades of committed service.
Outside of work, Socrates found joy in spending time with family and friends. BBQing was one of his favorite ways to bring everyone together, filling gatherings with music, laughter, stories, and the warmth of his generous spirit. These were the moments that truly captured who he was --a man happiest when surrounded by the people he loved most.
Socrates is survived by his daughters: Sonia Garfias, Barbra Garfias, and Linda Lalime, who carry forward his strength, values, and compassion. He also leaves behind his longtime partner, Norma Hernandez-Cuellar, whose companionship brought him comfort, joy, and unwavering support. He is further survived by seven loving siblings who cherished their time with him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carmen Elias-Hernandez and Ricardo Garfias-Romero, whose teachings and love shaped his life from the very beginning.
Socrates was blessed with fourteen grandchildren and one cherished great-granddaughter, Zoe Malacara, all of whom brought him immense pride and happiness. His legacy lives on through them, reflected in their accomplishments, traditions, and the love he shared with each of them.
As we honor his memory, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, generosity, and heart—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. His spirit remains with us always.
