Solon Miles Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dettling Funeral Home on Sep. 22, 2025.
Solon Benjamin Miles Jr. (Bud), 93, of Houston passed away September 16, 2025. Bud was born on October 6, 1931 in Beaumont, Texas to Solon and Dorothy Hopkins Miles. He is preceded in death by his parents and stepbrother Davis Terry. He is survived by his loving wife Ann; his children Mary Miles Millik and husband Donald, Solon Benjamin Miles III (Toby), Dee Anna Miles Kibler, and Nancy Miles Smith and husband Patrick; his grandchildren Matthew Miles Millik and wife Meredith, Michael Millik and wife Katherine, Solon Benjamin Miles IV (Max), Lainee Miles, Allison Smith, Ryan Smith, and Winston Kibler; his great-grandchildren Miles Millik and Micah Millik, and his stepsister Patricia Terry Hopper. Bud was notorious for making a mean bloody mary. He loved fishing, playing golf, and a colorful pair of suspenders with a flat cap. Even more so, he loved his high school sweetheart, Ann, who he married on September 21st of 1952. Bud and Ann built a life together following an 18-month enlistment overseas in the United States Air Force. Upon his return, he completed his college education in Business Administration at Lamar University (class of 1958) and ultimately moved to Houston to work for the Coca Cola Bottling Company for many years until his retirement. People who knew Bud would describe him as a kind man and a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts of America, and had the opportunity to attend and speak at two of his grandson's Eagle Court of Honor ceremonies. While family came first, golfing and fishing were two of the most important parts of Bud's life. He marshaled at Bear Creek Golf Course after retirement and would often take his clubs on trips to Colorado. His favorite place on Earth was the log cabin in Arkansas, where he would spend his days on the lake fishing. His children say that when preparing to go on fishing trips he would spend hours tying his own flies. Furthermore, they always looked forward to having a family fish fry upon his return. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at 11:00am, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church 11720 Joan-of-Arc Drive, Houston, Texas 77024. Bud will be laid to rest at Houston National Cemetery following a reception in the church Community Center.
