Spencer Wells Davis, age 89, of Dushore, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, February 19, 2025, at the Valley View Nursing Center, Montoursville, PA.
Spence as he was known by his family and friends was born on October 27, 1935, in Brooklyn, NY, a son of the late Spencer Stewart and Lauretta Gardner Davis.
He graduated from Rhodes Prep High School in New York City as a member of the class of 1953. He furthered his education at C.W. Post College in Brookville, NY, where he earned his B.A., and received his MS from Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY.
He began working at Lerner’s Shops, on 5th Ave, in New York City as a manager and then was a special education teacher on Long Island, NY. He moved to Pennsylvania in 1971 and became the Supervisor of Special Education at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit.
He married the former Barbara Jean Baird of Ardmore, PA, on November 18, 1978.
Spence honorably served his country in the United States Navy and then the Unites States Naval Reserves. He then retired from the United States Army National Guard. Spence was very proud of his military service and had the special honor of serving in the Color Guard during President JFK’s inauguration and his funeral.
Spence and Barb retired and made their home in Dushore, Sullivan County, in July of 1999.
They became very active members of the Dushore Lions Club, where they brought the idea of the Outhouse Races to Sullivan County in 2000. Since then, it has become an immensely popular event held every August with thousands attending. Together they played Santa and Mrs. Claus for many Lions Club sponsored events. They were also dedicated and active members of the Sullivan County Food Pantry where Spence and Barb served together as co-coordinators of the food pantry.
Spence was a member of Evergreen Lodge No. 163 F. & A.M., Monroeton, PA, where he previously served as treasurer. He also served as a member of EMTA board and on the Drug and Alcohol Council for Sullivan County and served as a Sullivan County School Board member.
He enjoyed his Ford Mustang Convertible and all sports, from the Dallas Cowboys to Penn State, to the NY Yankees and the Philadelphia Flyers. Spence also authored two books, The Street Games of 153rd St. based in Flushing, NY, while he was growing up, and also Charlie Chubby Bubble.

He is also survived by his loyal canine companion Ginger, and two nieces, Lisa (Damien) Forkner, Heather Baird, and a nephew Scott Baird, and several great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, in the Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Linda Renninger, of the Forksville United Methodist Church, officiating.
There will be a Masonic Service at 10:45 AM by members of the Evergreen Lodge No. 163 F. & A.M. Tuesday morning at the funeral home.
Friends and family may call on Tuesday morning, February 25, 2025, from 9:00 AM until the start of the service at 10:45 AM in the Homer Funeral Home, Dushore, PA.
Military Honors will be accorded at the conclusion of the funeral service by members of the United States Navy Funeral Honors Detail.
Interment will be held in the Forksville Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Sullivan County Food Pantry, PO Box 55, Dushore, PA 18614.
