Srikant Chigurupati (1976–2025)
S/O Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi Chigurupati and Dr. Raja Babu Chigurupati
Srikant, Born in India in 1976, passed away on January 28, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and justice. At just a few months old, he was separated from his parents, Vijaya Laksmi, Raja Babu and his older brother, Sridhar, as they emigrated to the United States. For the next five years, he was doted on by his grandparents and affectionately nicknamed "Dollar Babu" by his grand uncle, which soon evolved to "Dolly."
In 1980, Srikant joined his family in the U.S., where the spoiling continued, and he quickly found himself locked in a spirited sibling rivalry with Sridhar. Though they were often competitive, especially over their shared love for the White Sox and Fighting Illini, their bond was undeniable. The brothers were remarkably alike-physically, vocally, and intellectually. They looked alike, sounded alike, and often thought alike. From the way they spoke to the way they viewed the world, it was clear that they were two halves of the same whole.
Growing up, Srikant admired Sridhar, looking up to him as a role model. But as much as he tried to follow in his brother's footsteps, Srikant always maintained his own chosen path. Their sibling rivalry often blurred into camaraderie as they navigated life side by side. Their close relationship deepened over the years, marked by both shared and individual milestones.
Srikant was a devoted son who would drive 300 miles to be by his parents' side whenever they needed him. His deep love for his parents, Dr. Vijaya Laksmi and Dr. Raja Babu, was evident in the countless ways he showed up for them, offering support and care in times of need. Their bond was one of mutual admiration and respect, and Srikant often turned to them for guidance, wisdom, and warmth. His parents were a central part of his life, and his love for them was unwavering.
In 2002, Srikant graduated from Washington University Law School, and in 2003, he served as best man at Sridhar's wedding to Sherri. Their connection, strengthened by time, was enriched by Sherri's presence, whom Srikant welcomed into the family with open arms. Despite all their playful teasing-Srikant's bond with Sridhar was rooted in love, mutual respect, and an understanding that only brothers could share.
In 2006, Srikant met his best friend, Chris Faerber, while working in the public defender's office. Their friendship grew over the years into an unbreakable bond, built on mutual respect, shared humor, and a commitment to justice. Chris became an integral part of Srikant's life, offering support and camaraderie throughout their personal and professional journeys.
Professionally, Srikant made his mark in Missouri's public defense system, first in Hannibal, then St. Louis, where his reputation grew as a tenacious and skilled attorney. In 2010, he was honored as the Missouri Defense Attorney of the Year. His dedication to justice led him to the capital crimes division, and in 2015, he secured a significant victory before the Missouri Supreme Court.
As a fun and thoughtful uncle, Srikant often teased Sridhar about failing at his one job in life by letting his kids grow up Cubs fans, but the rivalry was always in good fun. He made sure to buy Cubs paraphernalia for his niece, Shayla, and nephew, Devan, much to Sridhar's chagrin, yet always with a touch of love and humor. To Srikant, Shayla and Devan were his favorite people in the world. He loved them deeply and took immense joy in being a guiding presence in their lives. He was more than just an uncle-he was a mentor, a source of support, and a role model who encouraged them to grow into the best versions of themselves.
Srikant also shared a deep and cherished bond with his sister-in-law, Sherri. He thought of Sherri as a sister, and often turned to her for advice on everything in life. Their relationship was one of mutual trust and respect, and Srikant valued her insight deeply.
In 2017, Srikant hosted a large gathering of family for the Great Eclipse, demonstrating his love for bringing people together. Over the past five years, he worked as a prosecutor in the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's office, continuing to earn the respect and admiration of those who knew him.
Srikant's devotion to his family, friends, and career made him beloved by all who knew him. He will be remembered as a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend, and as a passionate defender of constitutional rights. His impact on the lives of those closest to him will endure, as will the memory of his warmth, wisdom, and humor.
Srikant is survived by his mother, Vijaya Lakshmi, father, Raja Babu, his brother Sridhar and sister-in-law Sherri, his beloved niece Shayla, his nephew Devan, and a vast circle of friends and extended family who will miss him deeply. His smile, candor, teasing, and infectious banter will be profoundly missed by his cousins. Srikant brought boundless joy, warmth, and light into the lives of all who knew him. His sudden departure has left an irreplaceable void, one that none of us will ever be able to fill.
A Visitation for Srikant will be held at DuPage Funeral Chapel (951 W. Washington Street, West Chicago) on Monday, February 3, 2025, from 9:30 AM until the time of Puja at 11 AM.
