Stanley "Pee Wee" Boyd Hassell, age 68, of Elizabeth City, passed away peacefully at his home on September 24, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, on July 6, 1957, to the late Theodore Roosevelt "Thedy" Hassell and Julia Ballance Hassell.
Stanley was united in holy matrimony in September 1977, to the love of his life, Poppy Ralph Hassell, where they loved each other to no end for 48 years.
In Newland, where Stanley grew up, he learned many of his crafts and trades. Starting at a young age, he has always been a hard worker. He dedicated his life to his craft as a skilled carpenter in the construction industry, even running his own company and later, working for his son, who he taught everything he knew. Known for being a master of many trades, he possessed an extraordinary ability to fix just about anything, especially within the realm of carpentry and auto mechanics. Between farming, running heavy machinery, home building, engine rebuilds/repairs, roofing, creating fishing lures, building fishing nets, there was nothing he could not do. Affectionately referred to as "Stan the Man," he was known in the local racing community for driving his #31 car on the dirt track of Dixieland Speedway, capturing the thrill and spirit of local racing. Beginning his "need for speed" at Albemarle Kart Club in the 80's, he ran the Hassell Racing kart team years later. Stanley spent many years alongside some of his closest friends truck and tractor pulling throughout North Carolina. His talents extended beyond his professional life, as he was also an avid outdoorsman who cherished hunting and commercial fishing.
Stanley is survived by his devoted wife, Poppy Ralph Hassell; his caring daughter, Leah Hassell (Tim); and his loving son, Scott Hassell; and daughter-in-law, Tonia. He leaves behind four sisters: Carolyn Jordan (Howard), Cleo Bennett, Norma Jordan (Doug), and Nettie Matkins (John); and five brothers: Cecil Hassell (Doris), Caleb Hassell, Dallas Hassell, Henry Hassell (Connie), and Jarvis Pete Hassell (Debbie); and an abundance of nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. His legacy continues through his treasured grandchildren, Tatum Smith (Silas), Scott Hassell, Jr., Tiffany Moneymaker (Danny), Aimee Chappell, and Aaron Alder, along with great-grandchildren, Adalyn Rose Smith and Brooklynn Rayne Moneymaker. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents; his sister, Patsy Eure; and his brother, Tex Hassell.
The family sends a special thank you to Stanley's beloved niece, Bari Nicole, who helped the family care for him in his final days.
The family will announce a service to honor Stanley's life at a later date. His spirit, skills, love, wittiness, and especially his charisma will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
