FREEHOLD – Stanley Maltzman, Artist, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and companion,
died peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at the age of 104. Born July 4, 1921 in the Bronx
to Abraham and Sarah (Kirschner) Maltzman, he was a veteran of WWII, he enlisted in the US Coast Guard
and served in the Pacific aboard the USS Centaurus. He was named Greene County Veteran of the Year in 2024.
Upon returning from service, he married his childhood sweetheart, Rachel
(Petruzelli) in 1945. She predeceased him in 2005. He is survived by their 2
daughters: Susan Story (husband Douglas) and Carole Kavanagh (husband
Robert). Loving grandfather to Sarah Story, William and Kathleen Kavanagh and
Meghan Merna. Great-grandfather to Nora and Sammy Kavanagh; Alexis and
Conor Merna. Also survived by his long-time devoted companion, Joyce Barry and
their German Shepherd rescue, Minnie.
Maltzman worked in Manhattan as a commercial artist for 25 years. Once their
daughters finished school, he and Rachel moved to Freehold where he pursued
his dream of becoming a fine artist. During his prolific career, Maltzman worked in
a variety of media, published 2 art books, and taught many workshops in the area.
His work is in the permanent collections of the Carnegie Museum of Natural
History, Smithsonian Institute and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and he
received many prestigious art awards. He was designated a Pastel Society of
America Hall of Fame Honoree. His beautiful paintings and drawings of nature
will remain as part of his legacy. The many friends and former students who
attended his 100 th birthday celebration were a testament to his role in the
community.
Calling hour Tuesday, November 4 from 12-1PM at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home,
4898 State Route 81, Greenville, followed immediately by funeral service at 1 PM
and burial at Freehold Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider planting a tree in his honor
