Retired Navy Captain Stanley Artemas Richardson died peacefully on 13 March 2026. His wife Renee and son Sam were with him. Originally from Boston Ma, Stanley attended Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs NY. He joined the Navy in 1977 after graduation. He attended Officer Candidate School at New Port, RI, then served aboard the Aircraft Carriers USS Saratoga and USS Lexington, as well as USS Mobil and USS LaSalle. From 1989 to 1990 he was the Operations Director for McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Stan fulfilled diverse roles for the Navy including, Operations Officer in Bahrain for Operation Deny Flight. During the Balkan War, he served in Naples, Italy as Chief of Operations NATO Command Striking Forces Southern Region; he spent many months in Sarajevo, Bosnia, as senior briefer for Admiral Smith, Commander Naval Forces South. He worked at Defense Intelligence Agency in the Iraq/Iran Branch. Was a United Nations Inspector in Iraq. In Korea he served as Navy Chief of Staff US Naval Forces Korea, then as Senior Naval Officer for United States Forces Korea and Deputy U.N. Forces Korea. In 2007 he received a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies from Naval War College. He was then selected to serve as Inspector General for Military Sealift Command. His final Active duty was as a Judge for the Navy's Physical Evaluation Board. He retired in July of 2012 and was selected to serve as Civilian Advisor to the Government of Afghanistan, helping establish Afghan Inspector General positions. In 2013 he became the US Advisor to Deputy Minister of Defense. In 2014 after two continuous years in Afghanistan, the family moved to
Bennington, Vermont.

Stan is preceded in death by his father Artemas P. Richardson II (a WWII Navy Veteran), mother Fredeica (also a WWII W.A.S.P. Pilot and OSS Veteran), older brother David, and two brothers-in-law: Jack Howland, and Peter Olsen, and his brother in law Mike Rivard. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Renee (Retired Navy Commander), his eldest son Artemas P. Richardson III (Navy Veteran), his wife Delia (Navy Veteran), his daughter Anna-Constantia Richardson, her wife Julie Richardson, his son John-William Richardson (AKA Sam), and his youngest son Thomas P. Richardson IV, wife Cali Richardson. Stan is also survived by older brother Steven Richardson and his wife Cathy, as well as sisters Ann Howland /Olsen and Nicky and her husband Charlie Butterfield. Brothers in law Robert, wife Ann Rivard, and Bill, wife Miki Rivard. There are seven grandchildren who will miss their grandfather, and three nieces and a nephew who will miss their uncle.
