Stanley Stone Obituary

Stanley Stone was born on January 14, 1931, to Darnel and Gladys Bishop Stone in Baldwyn, Mississippi. He was predeceased by his younger brother Wayne and by his parents. Stanley grew up in the Baldwyn area until the family moved to northwestern Alabama. They moved back to Baldwyn, where he finished high school and ran the motion pictures at the local movie theater.

Stanley went to Northeast Mississippi Junior College in Booneville until he enlisted in the U.S. Airforce in 1951. In his Airforce training in Natchitoches, Louisiana, he met Lucille Iles, who was in nurses training at Northwestern State University.

Stanley served four years in the Airforce during the Korean Conflict, before returning from Alaska. Stanley and Lucille got married July 7, 1955, and he started that fall at the University of Mississippi majoring in accounting. After graduating from Ole Miss, Stanley and Lucille stayed in Oxford until they built a house and moved the family to Tupelo in 1965. They stayed in that home 60 years. He worked as an agent for the U.S. Treasury Department until he retired in 1987. He was also a long-time member of the local Civitan luncheon group and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.

Stanley is survived by their three children, Bill Stone (Glenice), Ann Benson (Butch), and Eddie Stone (Jamie); and five grandchildren, Vince Stone (Kim), Adam Benson (Meghan), Mary Katherine Benson, Scott Stone and Mollie Stone; and two great grandchildren, Mason Stone and Katie Benson. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Joan Stone; niece, Treasa Smith (Jerry); and nephew, Anthony Stone (Claire).

They have been members of First Baptist Church since 1965, with Stanley serving as Treasurer for a time, a deacon and choir member for many years. The family is very grateful for the loving staff members, his deacon, Sunday School members, and beautiful friends at the church who have cared for Stanley and Lucille these last few years. We are also very grateful for the Right At Home healthcare professionals, NMMC Homecare and wonderful Hospice staff who gave excellent care to Stanley. In lieu of flowers the family encourages gifts to be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 N. Church Street, Tupelo, MS 38804, or online at FBCTupelo.com.

Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until service time Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at Pegues, Tupelo.

A Celebration of Life service honoring the life of Mr. Stanley Stone will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of Pegues Funeral Directors with Bro. Matt Powell and Bro. Rickey Young officiating. Burial will follow at Prentiss Memorial Gardens.
