Stanley Waters Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Aug. 17, 2007.
Waters, Stanley R. 8/16/1946 – 8/10/2007 Much loved veterinarian, golfer, husband and father. Died peacefully at home with wife Claudia by his side. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January, he confronted his fate with his usual quiet dignity. Stan will be tremendously missed by the veterinary community, where he was highly respected for his knowledge, surgical skills and genuine love for his profession and patients. After graduating from the U of M in 1976 he was employed by Stillwater Veterinary Clinic, soon to become a partner, earning the love and respect of his many loyal employees for more than 30 years. Known also for his skills on the golf course, he is greatly missed by his many golfing "buddies." Originally from Postville, Iowa, Stan was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Tom. Survived by daughters, Abigail Waters and Natalie Waters Seum; son-in-law, Brad Seum; sister- in-law, Sharon; and our beautiful grandson, Henry Seum, who will miss the privilege of getting to know him. Special thanks to Jan of Lakeview Hospice for her loving care and concern. Hospice nurses are saints, here to provide compassion and skills in our hour of need. Thanks to Stan's many doctors, who gave him the best care available, and to our many friends who provided support, we're forever in your debt. A "Celebration of Stan's Life" will be held September 5 from 4 – 8 p.m. at Oak Glen Golf Course in Stillwater. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Helping Paws, an organization Stan was involved with that provides service dogs for people with physical disabilities (PO Box 634, Hopkins, MN 55343 or www.helpingpaws.org). we are very sorry to hear or the loss of Dr. Stan Waters. We considered him first as a friend to both of us and our goldens who he always cared for in the kindest manner. It was also an enjoyable conversation discussing sports cars and racing and knew he enjoyed his audi TT and the driving pleasure. He will be surely missed and always remembered.

Dear Claudia, Natalie, and Abigail.

I'm so sorry to hear of Stan's passing. I know that some of the joy of owning a pet is gone for me because one of the great things about having my dogs has been an excuse to see and get together with Stan. I feel somewhat lost now that I don't have his special "touch".
I know that a bunch of us will talk and laugh for the rest of our lives about the way his face would light up whenever someone needed medical help on a remote fishing trip - especially stitches. What a great memory.
Know that your sense of loss and grief is shared by many. Take care.

Our hearts are heavy and many a tear has been shed over the illness and death of Dr. Stan Waters. We have been with him through Stillwater Vet Clinic since he started there, caring for our bulldogs, which we bred and exhibited and least of all, all of the cats of our lives. His approach as a vet and a great person will always be remembered and cherished. The Stillwater Vet Clinic and staff and the family of Stan Waters has lost a great human being, the best! What a shock we had today at the Stillwater Vet Clinic. We had no idea our friend was sick. Dr. Waters meant more to us than our vet, he was our friend. He had so much compassion in his heart that it overflowed to all that he touched. We will never forget his patient, caring ways with our Rottweiler, Sophie, and his compassion when she passed. He helped us to let her go and that was such a great gift. I now realize that we were diagnosed at the same time, but my fate has a much different outcome than Dr. Stan's. As it sinks in, I will think of you often, and know that he is with Sophie, and a lot of other pets he helped along the way, and they are all waiting for us to come home too. The time will be short for them, but long for us. Know that your father and husband changed our lives forever, and that is something to be so proud of.

Dear Aunt Claudia, Abbey, and Natalie

I am deeply sorry for your loss. It is hard to believe his life was taken at such an early age. I believe that the family is now reunited with Grandpa Paul, Grandma Cass, Tom and now Stan. I have great memories of times we all shared in Postville and up at the cabin.
He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed by everyone.

Dear Family of Stan,
I met Dr. Waters at the Stillwater vet. He helped me thru many illnesses and deaths with my two golden retievers and our latest one, Kitty. He tried to save the last two but to no avail. His professionalism and care of our pets was greatly appreciated and we shall always remember him.

Our prayers are with you and your family in the tough days that lie ahead.

I believe that I met Stanley in December 1965, and purchased his 1965 MGB roadster, light blue in color. He was about my age at the time. I was 20. That Stanley was from Postville, Iowa. Stan was working for one of the airlines in customer service, and he told me that he had just been drafted by the military. Thus, he needed to sell his prized car, purchased just in July. I thought of Stanley earlier this spring, thinking that he may be happy that I still have that wonderful car, may want to see it and possibly drive it again. I didn't see his name in the Minneapolis telephone book, therefore didn't pursue locating him. Now, I wish that I had tried harder to locate him. I am so sorry for your loss. From the words expressed by many others, he obviously was a wonderful husband, father, and a friend to many. May your memories of him continue to sustain you.

Stan took such excellent care of our dogs over the years. He was a gifted surgeon and thought about things with the very best interest of the dogs always in mind. Many times he saved our newfie, who had a fetish for eating socks, from a full blown surgery through his patience by fishing the socks out the hard way.
We always trusted him implicitly. We are so sad to think of Stillwater Vet without him, and no longer being able to consult him.
Our prayers are with you, and we look forward to the celebration of his life!

To the family and friends of Stan Waters. I am very sorry for your loss. I had met Stan when I was shadowing the vets at Stillwater Veterinary Clinic almost a year ago and I learned a lot from him. He was a great veterinarian and you could tell that he really loved his job. He had such compassion for his clients, and their owners. He will be missed.

To the family and friends of Dr. Waters:

I never got to meet your dad, husband or friend - but I heard a lot about him from those at Helping Paws that he helped with his vet skills and friendship. When they spoke of him it was always with a warmth and respect due a man that gave so willingly of his time and talents.

My thoughts are with you as you begin to negotiate life without this wonderful man. I hope you will always draw comfort from the knowledge he will never be forgotten by those he cared for.

The notice of Stan's passing brought tears to my eyes. I could have never asked for a more kind, caring and compassionate man who could have been my cockers doctor. He was always there when I needed him no matter what time of the day. He always did everything he could to make sure my kids were well taken care of and when they passed he was there to cry with me. My life was blessed for having Stan as my vet and friend.

Dear Claudia, Abigail and Natalie -
Please accept our sympathy at this most difficult time. We will keep you and your entire family in our thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks. We met Dr. Waters through his work with the Helpinig Paws Organization in Hopkins, MN. We are a foster home for Rocky, a service dog in training, who was cared for on a number of occasions by Dr. Waters. He was very generous in sharing his time, talents, skills, and compasion with the Helping Paws organization and the greater Twin Cities community through the many service dogs that he provided care for at the Stillwater Veterinary Clinic. The contributions that he made cannot be measured. His legacy will continue on for many years to come as Rocky and the other service dogs from Helping Paws continue their work throughout the Twin Cites. This service work would not be possible without his generous contributions and giving spirit. He will be greatly missed.

I am honored to have known and worked with Stan even for a short period of time. To this date I have not met another veterinarian who would talk to, interact with, and show affection to the boarding and hospitalized animals like he did. This is just one of many examples of the wonderful person that he was. He will be sorely missed but fondly remembered.

We hope your loss is somehow lessened by all the wonderful memories being shared.
Stan was the first vet I ever met that got to know Us along with our dogs. What an incredible memory he had - and he always remembered what our individual dogs history's were; and ours! And of course, his incredible gift as a surgeon was well noted throughout the dog sport communities since he was the King of ACL and hip repairs!
We had complete trust in him!
What an incredible person!

In the 25 years that we have known Stan, he was a wonderful veterinarian, person and good friend. He was a gentle man who always took time to talk about fishing or golf. He was always there when we needed him for one of our dogs. We will miss him.
