Stuart Richard Small, age 90, of Bloomfield, CT died on March 5, 2025. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut to David and Freda (Meirowitz) Small and was known for his generosity and his love of nature.
He graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1957 and was owner/CEO of Colonial Spring company for over 40 years.
Stuart was married to the love of his life, Arline (Kaplan), for 67 years and is survived by her, son Mark (Kerry Rosenthal), daughter Debbie Swartz (Richard), grandchildren David, Elizabeth, Rachel, Gabrielle, Isaac and great grandchildren Maya, Reese, Theo, Wesley and Samuel, and his brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Ruth Small.
Stuart traveled, hiked, skied, golfed, belonged to the Appalachian Mountain Club, enjoyed photography and was a pioneer and enthusiast of holistic medicine. Anyone who knew him knows exactly how he felt about pharmaceuticals. He adored his family, was resourceful and could repair anything, loved Costco, buying food in bulk, and feeding his family. He sponsored classes for UConn medical students at Bastyr U of Naturopathic Medicine to inspire them to consider all modalities when choosing the most effective treatment for healing. He supported the ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center, Sierra Club, Appalachian Mountain Club and Jewish causes to name a few. Always for the underdog, random acts of kindness were given freely to anyone in need.
A funeral service will be held on March 15 at 12:30 at Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford, CT. Graveside service immediately following at Beth El Cemetery. Shiva will be held at 2:45 in the community room at Temple Beth El.
In lieu of flowers contributions in Stuart’s memory may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center (https://www.splcenter.org) or the Appalachian Mountain Club (Appalachian Mountain Club)
