Stephen Bovasso Obituary

Stephen G. Bovasso, DO

Stephen G. Bovasso, DO, age 58, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away on April 21, 2023. He was born in Kirksville, Missouri, on October 19,1964. Steve is survived by his father, George Bovasso; mother, Florence Crummett; sister, Linda Bovasso; brother-in-law, Roy Flores; wife, Sharna; and his children, Blake and Ali Bovasso.

Steve was a 1993 graduate of the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship and anesthesia residency at Tulsa Regional Medical Center in 1997 and remained an attending physician there until 2022. He served as program director of the anesthesia residency program and president of the UTB Anesthesia group. Due to his mentoring nature, Steve was awarded the OSU Medical Center Attending of the Year in 2010 and the Osteopathic Founders Foundation 2018 Outstanding Physician.

Steve was highly respected, talented, empathetic, intelligent, thoughtful, dedicated, protective and selfless. He was a fierce advocate for his patients, partners, residents, and family. His life was well spent in service, and his legacy will continue to live on through all of us. The only thing Steve loved more than his medical family was his actual family. He was the best son, brother, husband, father, mentor, and friend.

You could always find Steve with a kind smile on his face. Steve was happiest when he was riding his motorcycles, driving his classic cars, going on trips to Cabo, and spending as much time as he could at Grand Lake with family and friends. Steve lived his life to the fullest in every way.

In lieu of flowers, please remember Steve with memorial contributions to the ALS Association which provides resources to families and is helping search for a cure. https://donate.ok.als.org/teambovasso1

Funeral services will be at 3:30 pm, on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Temple Israel, 2004 E 22nd Place, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Steve and I were headed into the same career path and had many classes together at OSU in Stillwater. Several decades later after going to our respective medical schools at about 3:00 AM at Southcrest Hospital (now Hillcrest South) while doing admissions I see that familiar unforgettable smile as he was documenting in a patient chart. Such a gentle and kind spirit and am devastated to hear of his passing. RIP my friend. Till we meet again......

I can not imagine the enormity of loss felt by Sharna, Ali, Blake, George, Florence and Linda. And every single one blessed to call Steve 'friend'. Though I fully appreciate the blessing of leaving ALS here on earth with us, as Steve goes to walk and wait elsewhere for the huge group of family and friends now celebrating his life.

I am one of those, who though long ago neither a local resident or regular visitor, can not imagine life without Steve immediately available. Always fielding any bs medical question I may have had - with a laugh I surely hope. Always being there for a call or a message.

I am many miles away, and missed my chance for a visit. I own that failure. But it is amazing, and is also what I have told so many as we spoke of Steve and his family. The ONLY reason I have peace in my heart is in the love and respect Steve passed my way in recent messages.

What an amazing man, what a remarkable husband, father, son, friend, professional, community leader, you name it.

I send my love and prayers to all of you today.

I send my respect to the strength shown this past year.

I send my thanks to all who were there through it all and in particular these past weeks.

Thank you Steve, for everything you gave me in this lifetime. Told Caroline the first night I met you Fulton and I rode bike's to your house. So it certainly was a lifetime.

I took you on every walk over here this trip, with some great tunes each time!

Sharing a quote from a book Steve and I shared, 'North of Havana' by Randy Wayne White. The quote is exactly why we shared it, and defines what we have all lost. Til next time my friend! More than worthy, Steve...no doubt when thinking your way my friend.

'Sappy greeting cards aside, friendship is defined not measured by one´s willingness to go to the aid of another. It is an obligation that blends conscience and accountability. Very, very few are worthy of the word'
