Stephen Cuyler Obituary

Stephen DuGueschlin Cuyler, 78, of Mashpee, MA passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 11, 2025, in the family home in Mashpee, on Cape Cod, shared with his loving wife, JoAnn Burk Cuyler. Steve was a Christmas Baby born in 1946 in New Rochelle, NY to James D. and Marjorie Ann (Brown) Cuyler.
Raised in Chatham, NJ. Upon graduation from Chatham High School, Steve attended Lehigh University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
He was a member of IEEE and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Following graduation from Lehigh in 1969, Steve worked at the Factory Insurance Association of Hartford, CT. He worked at Allstate Insurance Company while attending Seton Hall University School of Law School, from which he received a J.D. in 1975. Steve became an associate, then partner at the prestigious law firm of Stryker, Tams and Dill in Newark, New Jersey. Steve developed a nationally recognized expertise in insurance law. Together with his law partner and future wife, JoAnn Burk, Steve established Cuyler, Burk LLP in Morris County, NJ which quickly expanded and earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence in insurance law and commercial litigation defense. Cuyler Burk transitioned to female ownership before merging with the prestigious law firm of d'Arcambal, Ousley (now d'Arcambal, Quesada, Malyk, Peters & Creed LLP) prior to Steve and Jo Ann's retirement in 2013.
Steve was an accomplished sailor from a very young age and loved cooking for friends and family, woodworking, golf and computer sciences. After retirement Steve further developed his expertise in furniture making. Steve was a man of numerous accomplishments and had many friends and family who already miss him dearly.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn Burk Cuyler, at home, his daughter Kimberly and her husband, Brian Risko, his grandchildren Brandon and Sarah Risko, all much beloved by Steve, as well as Steve & JoAnn's new puppy, Sammy.
Services will be held at a later date in New Jersey and will be posted on this website.
In lieu of flowers, Steve would have requested donations to the SPCA or to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Steve was one of my best friends. We worked together and had great times with our families and friends. He was truly a gentleman and a scholar. And a good husband, gsther and grandfather. I will miss him terribly. My heart and love go out to Joann the love of his life and to Kim and the entire family.

I have fond memories of our experiences at Lehigh and Lambda Chi Alpha and in the early 70s when we shared `diners´ together at Wendy´s in Newark, NJ as you were attending Seton Hall and I was at Rutgers-Newark. In 1982 you represented me in a legal matter, but I had to remind you, that you were representing me and not my adversary, once that was clear you did a fine job! R. I.P brother!
