MARION, VAStephen Edward Harper, age 65, suddenly passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at Gray Ridge Village in Marion, VA.He was born on February 15, 1961, the son of the late Edward Duane and Majorie Louise Harper. Steve was a loving brother who explored music and art throughout his life. He grew up in Louisville, KY and played trumpet in the high school marching band. Over the years, he also became accomplished in acoustic and electric guitar, electronic keyboards, piano, violin, alto and soprano recorders, and the harmonica. He could quickly learn how to play almost any musical instrument he wanted to. He loved to play by ear (whether it was classical, carols and hymns, or rock) as well as to read and write musical notation. Most of all, he enjoyed creating his own compositions and arrangements and performing them for others.Steve also loved art. He was always sketching and painting and often won ribbons at the County Fair in Harlan, KY where he lived for many years. He especially enjoyed painting landscapes and nature scenes and sharing them with people he cared about. He worked hard at everything he did.Many thanks to his caregivers in Virginia and Kentucky. Stephen was cherished in this life as he faced many hardships. He will be deeply missed.The family will honor his memory in private.
