Stephen Gerald Kaplan
Stephen G. Kaplan, born January 26, 1944, in Boston, MA, lived a life filled with love, humor, and dedication to his family and community.
Steve met his wife, Susan Jaye-Kapan, when they were just 16 years old, and they shared 59 wonderful years together. Their love story was an inspiration to everyone who knew them. Steve was the proud father of Eve (Stéphane) Bois and the late Evan Kaplan, and a beloved grandfather to Charlotte and Adèle. He is survived by his brothers Kenneth (Rhonda), Gary (Julie) and his sister Elaine Belsky (Larry), his sister-in-law Barbara Jaye (Doug Martin), brother-in-law Barry Jaye, his daughter-in-law Julie Friel (Rodney Glose), and many loving nieces and nephews.
Steve's family was his greatest joy, especially spending time with his granddaughters and his special young friends, Cole and Will Freed.
Steve's life was marked by kindness and a deep sense of service. He was a quiet but constant presence in the Western MA community, serving as Treasurer and active member of the Holyoke Rotary for over 40 years and Sinai Temple in Springfield for 20 years. He was a blood donor for more than 25 years, a mentor for the Kensington International School, and a Salvation Army volunteer who proudly rang the bell for over 15 years. He co-founded Go Fit and Link to Libraries, leaving behind a legacy of generosity and impact.
Professionally, Steve was a partner at MBK CPA (formerly Joseph Kalicka and Company) in Holyoke, MA, where he worked for over 40 years. He was a member of the Mass Society of CPAs and a past board member. He earned countless awards and commendations, though he rarely spoke of them, preferring to focus on others rather than himself.
Steve was known for his sharp mind and sharper wit. He had a knack for puns and a love of folk music and elegant bow ties. He always had a kind word for everyone he met. Whether enjoying opera, sailing, traveling, or playing math-related games, Steve approached life with enthusiasm and curiosity.
He was a loyal friend, spending over 35 years golfing and sharing laughs at the Twin Hills Country Club, where his local dog buddies often joined him for a few relaxing hours.
Steve's family and friends are forever grateful for the care and kindness shown to him by his aides, Daenia, Joyce, Poochie, Michelle, Maureen, Coralee, Debby, and Kay, and the incredible support from Spectrum Health hospice staff, and his dear friend Rabbi Devorah Jacobson.
Steve's life was a testament to the power of kindness, humility, and a good sense of humor. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who were lucky enough to know him.
Donations in Steve's memory can be made to Link to Libraries, Holyoke Rotary, or a charity of your choice. A celebration of life will be organized for summer 2025, most likely an ice cream party something Steve always loved!
