Stephen "Steve" McGovern, 50, of Lowell, MA, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 24, 2025, in Lowell.

Born in Newton, MA, Steve was the son of Janet (Deegan) Delfino and Stephen McGovern Sr., and Stepson to his devoted father figure, Richard Delfino. He grew up in Westwood, graduating with the Class of 1993 from Westwood High School. He went on to earn a BA in English and Philosophy from Texas State University in San Marcos and later received his Master's degree from the Boston Architectural College, where he also shared his passion and knowledge as a professor. Ever the lifelong learner, Steve also held numerous certifications in various professional fields.

Steve was a man of many talents and passions. He was a master of the grill, known for hosting memorable BBQs where family and friends eagerly gathered for his famous smoked meats and legendary guacamole. He poured his heart into everything he did-never cutting corners and always striving to do things the right way.

A devoted fan of the Boston Bruins and a lover of all thing's hockey, Steve shared this passion with Richard Delfino, with whom he also enjoyed countless fishing trips. He coached his daughters' lacrosse and hockey teams with dedication and pride, never missing a moment to support and guide them. Steve loved his time on the ice with his "Beer League" teammates and friends. Many of whom became devoted friends with whom Steve could share his love of beer, food and hockey, on and off the ice, many times all in the same night.

Steve had a deep love for animals, especially his best girl Gigi. He had a remarkable ability to train his pets-sometimes even to play sports. His favorite music included blues, jazz, and classic rock, which often served as the soundtrack to his life's many adventures.

He is survived by his loving wife, Detra, his partner in both travel and the quiet joy of everyday life. That quiet joy included long philosophical and highly opinionated conversations that always ended with love. The love they shared was deep and unwavering. He also leaves behind his cherished daughters, Kayla "Kei" and Erin "Lex" McGovern, and Gigi, his beloved dog; his sister, Chelsea McGovern of Texas; his sisters-in law, Renee and Angel, brother-in law, Derek; his best friend and brother from another mother, John Corlito; a host of aunts and uncles, many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews and even more friends.

Steve lived fully, loved deeply, and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be remembered for his big heart, fierce dedication, sense of humor, and the way he brought people together-whether around a grill, on the ice, or simply with a kind word.

For my Aunt Janet, Detra and family--my heart goes out to you all. Sending my love, prayers and condolences.

For my cousin Stevie, I'll always remember you teaching me how to make Origami animals out of little pieces of colored paper as kids, and how creative that was. I have fond memories of us having fun together at many family gatherings. I will never forget your witty sense of humor and keen intellect on things. It comforts me to believe you are with my Dad, Grammy and Grampy now being embraced by God's eternal peace and love. Miss you, until we meet again.

I met Steve playing ice hockey and instantly liked the guy. His intensity and passion always showed on his face but that didn´t compare to his quick wit and 1 line comebacks!! My heart breaks for his wonderful family and he truly will be missed
