Stephen Murphy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Seals Funeral Home - Fortville on Oct. 20, 2025.

Stephen "Steve" Murphy, 80, of Fortville, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
Steve grew up in Indianapolis and was a proud graduate of Scecina Memorial High School, Class of 1962. He also attended Indiana Central College, now known as the University of Indianapolis and graduated in 1968. For the past 38 years, he made Fortville his home, building a life full of love, laughter, and family.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Karen (Anderson) Murphy, daughter Tanya (Wilson-Archer) Murphy and her wife Michelle, and son Russell Wilson. He is also survived by five grandchildren; Ashley, Jordan, Emily, Chloe, and Charles and three great-grandchildren; Savannah, Emery, and Spencer.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Margaret Murphy, and his three sisters, Catherine Klee, Maureen Eaton, and Rita Ponton.
Steve enjoyed playing golf for more than 45 years and bowled on a winning league for many seasons. A lifelong New York Yankees fan, he was a true lover of sports, especially baseball. Known for his sharp wit and humor, Steve was always ready with a good "dad joke" and his trademark extended "Howdy," which could make anyone smile. He proudly served in the Army Reserve for several years.
Steve and Karen dedicated over 35 years volunteering with Community Sharing, a nonprofit organization in Fortville. In the last decade, they were the driving force keeping the organization running and serving the community.
One of Steve's proudest moments came in March 2024, when he adopted Tanya and Russell after being their loving stepfather for 37 years. He was the best role model for his children and grandchildren, their steady foundation, example of strength, and source of unconditional love.
Steve will be remembered for his humor, integrity, and the quiet stability he brought to every life he touched. His presence will be deeply missed, and his memory forever cherished.
Visitation will be held at Seals Funeral Home, 122 W Staat St., Fortville, IN 46040 on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. with a funeral service immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that guests bring non-perishable food items to Seals Funeral Home (122 W Staat St., Fortville, IN 46040) to be donated to the local food pantry. Those unable to attend may mail a check in Steve's honor to Fortville Area Resource Mission (FARM), 9450 N 200 W, Fortville, IN 46040, to help provide food for those in need.
