Stephen "Steve" Owens

On Wednesday, December 3, at 3:33 p.m., Steve Owens-Child of God, lifelong Christian, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, brother and brother-in-law, uncle, cherished friend, and beloved loved one-transitioned peacefully from this earthly life to Life Eternal, joining the Church Triumphant. He is now in the loving arms of his Lord and Savior. There is no doubt that when Steve was welcomed home by his Heavenly Father, God said to him, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." He was also joyfully reunited with a long line of family and loved ones who went before him. What a glorious celebration they must be having.

Steve courageously battled cancer for three years. He did not lose his battle-in truth, he achieved victory over death. His physical suffering is finished, and throughout this long journey God was faithful every step of the way, providing strength, comfort, and peace exactly when they were needed. That comfort came through many blessings: family, friends, neighbors, compassionate nurses and doctors, and especially his sister-in-law, Raenel Hamlett, who walked faithfully alongside Steve and Janie throughout his journey. The family is eternally grateful for all who supported them.

At this time of profound loss, gratitude fills hearts for Steve's beautiful life and all that he meant to those who loved him. Steve and his wife, Janie, had just celebrated 36 years of marriage and often said they were still on their honeymoon, having truly married their soulmates. They cherished every day they were given and never wasted a moment. Each day they affirmed their love with the words, "I love you today." That simple yet powerful reminder stands as a legacy-life is precious and fleeting, and love should never go unspoken.

Steve was a humble, quiet, reserved, and deeply kind man. He attended Olivet Nazarene University and maintained close friendships with several college buddies throughout his life. He loved to travel and enjoyed woodworking-especially woodturning-golf, ping-pong, and photography. Each year, Steve lovingly crafted hand-turned heirloom wooden ornaments for his grandchildren, creating treasures that will be cherished for generations.

Some of Steve's final words to his sons were, "Carry on!" If there was a trait of Steve's that was admired or loved, may it live on through others so that his spirit continues through them. Carry on. Love one another.

Steve is survived by his loving wife, Janie Hamlett Owens; his sister-in-law, Raenel Hamlett of Clermont, Florida; his sons: Scott Owens and wife Paula of Cramerton, North Carolina; Ryan Owens and wife Lisa of Parker, Colorado; and Matt Wilson and wife Nayoung of Washington, Utah. He is also survived by his grandson, Joshua Owens of Parker, Colorado; granddaughters Kylee Owens and Keaten Owens of Mt. Holly, North Carolina; his brother, Dennis Owens and wife Jody of Sterling, Illinois; his stepsister, Carolyn Pickering of Olathe, Kansas; as well as several nieces and a nephew.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Verdean F. Owens and Janice Naylor Owens.

Rest in peace, dear and precious Steve. "I love you today. I will see you soon-remember to wait for me at the Pearly Gates."

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Cornerstone Hospice Foundation.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held in late spring of 2026 at Rabun Gap Presbyterian Church, in Rabun Gap, Georgia.
