Stephen John Schmall, 64, of Rochester, Minnesota died on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 from complications due to multiple health challenges. These challenges may have dimmed his physical abilities, but they never dimmed his faith in God or love for his family.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2025, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, Minnesota. A Memorial Mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Rochester, Minnesota, with an additional visitation one hour prior to Mass. A private burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor, Iowa.

Steve was born on January 3, 1961, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Leo and June (Angle) Schmall, and was the eighth of eleven children. He graduated from Newman High School in Mason City, Iowa in 1979 and from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa in 1983, with a B.A. in Accounting. He spent his career working in finance, starting at McGladrey, Hendrickson & Pullen (now RSM) in 1983. He worked for the Diocese of Davenport and Loras College before moving to Rochester and serving as Vice President of Finance and Facilities at Rochester Community and Technical College until his retirement in 2022.

Steve married Kelly Siegele on October 23, 1983, in McGregor, Iowa, and they were blessed with six children. Steve coached all his children in various sports over the years and loved to explain the finer points of baseball (like why one should never slide feet first!). He was a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings and spent his retirement watching his favorite teams continue to let him down year after year. He also spent countless hours tracing genealogy and family history for both the Schmall and Siegele families. He loved his grandchildren and was always up for a good "Grandpa Steve joke" or a living room lightsaber battle.

Steve is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 42 years, Kelly Schmall of Rochester; his six children, Amanda (Brian) Lorentz of Eagan, Minnesota; Tim (Sakura) Schmall of Studio City, California; Ben (Kelsey) Schmall of Carterville, Illinois; Matt (Alexis Bahr) Schmall of Rochester; Rebecca (Bryce Galewski) Schmall of Rochester; and Sam Schmall of Rochester; five grandchildren, Luke, Blake, Tobias, Kenni, and Shiloh; his mother- and father-in-law, Lowell and Joyce Siegele of McGregor, Iowa; ten brothers and sisters Mike (Jill) Schmall of Westerville, Ohio; Teri (Roy) Jones of Henderson, Nevada; Mary (Jerry) Theilen of Mason City, Iowa; Rose Donnelly of Robins, Iowa; Joanne Schmall of Scottsdale, Arizona; Joe (Barb) Schmall of Robins, Iowa; Kathy (Dan) Russell of Sanford, Florida; Tom (Sandy) Schmall of Chanhassen, Minnesota; Bob (Donna) Schmall of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Mark (Michelle) Schmall of West Des Moines, Iowa; a brother- and sister-in-law, Kurt (Diane) Siegele of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Kara (Charles) Koehler of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and June Schmall; his brother-in-law, Pat Donnelly; and a niece and nephew.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Christine Chen at Mayo Clinic. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sisters of St. Francis in Rochester, Minnesota; Holy Spirit Catholic School in Rochester, Minnesota; or Holy Spirit Catholic Church, in Rochester, Minnesota.
