Stephen Scott Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dykstra Funeral Homes Downtown Holland Chapel on Jan. 9, 2026.
Stephen Carl Scott was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 12, 1927.

After high school graduation he served four years in the US Navy Aviation as crew member on a PBY amphibious airplane during World War II. Steve was 98 years young.

After military service Steve attended Northern Illinois University in Dekalb and graduated with academic honors in education. He met his late wife Marjorie Moore while in college and after marriage they moved to southwest Michigan, eventually settling in Holland where they raised their three children, Jeffrey, Martha "Marty," and Susan. Steve worked as a cost accountant at Baker Furniture and later as purchasing agent at Widdicomb Furniture. After a career in the furniture industry, he owned his own trucking firm. Steve was a man of many interests and hobbies. Wood working and gardening (70 rose bushes) were prominent but the most important was fishing for salmon in Lake Michigan on his beloved Slickcraft boat and with his grandsons in Florida. He served as a Boy Scout Scoutmaster. Holland history was a great interest of Steve's. The Fishing with Veterans organization was something he thoroughly enjoyed. He was recently honored by various veterans' groups and featured on the News. He was always upbeat and had a great sense of humor. Smiling and laughter were a huge part of what Steve was made of.

He adored his beloved cats Kachari, Olivia, and Si. Often you could find Steve at deboer's Bakery enjoying sweet treats and conversation. Steve touched so many people in his life; he never met a stranger.

In 2011 Steve met Mary Walcott at Evergreen Commons. They married in 2013 and have resided at Freedom Village. Steve thrived on the friendships they made and the exceptional care received from the staff. Steve was a member of Central Avenue CRC. He also attended men's bible study. His faith was very important to him.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents Martha and Stephen Smolenski, his wife Marjorie, and daughters Martha and Susan, sister, and brother-in-law Dorcas (Bob) Mocella, and niece Susan Clavio. He is survived by his wife Mary, son Jeff, grandsons Patrick and Ryan, niece Carol Richardson, nephew Bob (Marilyn) Mocella, niece Dorie Damisch, and son-in-law Carl (Sharon) Phalin, also Marjorie's nephews, Tom (Sue)Dunn and Jim (Yvonne) Dunn.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 am, Monday (January 19) at Central Avenue Christian Reformed Church, 259 Central Avenue. Interment of Steve's cremains will be in Zeeland Cemetery. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service, also at the church.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Holland or the charity of one's choice.
