Stephen Scurlock Obituary
On Saturday, August 31, 2024, Stevie Scurlock ended a spectacular 74 year run on this planet and went home to his heavenly Father.
He was born January 30, 1950 in Gladewater, Texas to Ray and Kathlyn Scurlock. Steve attended Gladewater public Schools and graduated from Gladewater High School. He attended Kilgore College, then transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University and received his bachelor’s degree in business.
Steve had a long and successful industrial career. He worked for Stewart Stevenson, Schlitz Brewery, General American/Phillips 66 and completed his career at Texas Eastman in Longview.
He was a past member of the Gladewater School Board and was on the Board of Directors for the Gladewater Former Students Association. He was also member of the First United Methodist Church then later attended North Loop Church of Christ in Gladewater.
Steve had a unique gift for connecting with people. He never met a stranger and could always strike up a conversation and find some common ground in just a few minutes. He had a multitude of friends along with his lifelong connection with the Class of 1968 who he always kept up with over the years.
Steve was an avid reader. You never saw him without a book in hand wherever he went. He also loved guns and buying and selling them to add to his collection. In past years, he loved attending the state basketball tournament in Austin with friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jill Scurlock, and his parents, Ray and Kathlyn Scurlock, of Gladewater, Texas
He is survived by his sister, Sharon Scurlock Berryman of Lucas, TX; son, Dr. Corey Scurlock and wife Cynthia of New York and their daughters.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held on September 29, 1 pm, at the Gladewater Former Students Association Building at 2509 Hendricks Street, Gladewater, Texas 75647.
In honor of Steve and his love for Gladewater and the Gladewater Bears, please feel free to dress casually in jeans/khakis' AND wear your best GHS orange and black attire the day of the memorial service.
