Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Norfolk Chapel on May 20, 2025.
Stephen J. Seufer was born on St. Stephen's Day- December 26, 1943 in Ellensburg, WA. His mother Caroline was enduring WWII with her first son, Bill, while her husband Paul was fighting the Japanese in the South Pacific as a Navy Seabee and commanding a naval construction battalion. As a Navy Junior he attended 12 different schools before graduating from Granby High School in
Norfolk, VA in 1961. As a youth he delivered newspapers, washed cars, and cut grass. He was a fun-loving Boy Scout, but was flummoxed by Latin while learning to be an altar server at Catholic Mass. Steve graduated with the Class of 1965 from the US Naval Academy. He was commissioned in the Supply Corps where he served for 20 years before retiring in 1985 as a Lieutenant Commander. He served on the USS Fred T Berry, USS Fulton, and went to Vietnam in 1968 as the supply officer at Qui Nhon. Multiple east coast and west coast assignments followed before settling into Navy Resale (Norfolk) where he retired. Steve attended Old Dominion University earning two advanced degrees; one in Education and another in Public Administration. His M Ed provided him with an opportunity to work in the Virginia Beach Public Schools, and he later served as Town Manager in Windsor, VA. Steve left the active workforce and realized that he was BEST as HIS own boss. With extra time on his hands, he plunged into community service. He was a member of the Ghent Neighborhood League, Boy Scout membership coordinator, Catholic Charities, Serenity House Newport News, and the Virginia Beach North End neighborhood zoning committee- to name a few. His real passion lay in his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) where he recently celebrated 41 years of sobriety. As an avid traveler to over 89 countries, Steve moved to Thailand where he lived for 19 years. Steve mirrored his stateside volunteer activities in Thailand- ESL instructor, village chairman, and service to AA in mentor and leadership roles. Steve's declining health was the impetus for his return to the US and passed away on May 8.
He was pre-deceased by his father, RAdm Paul Seufer; mother, Caroline Power; stepmother, Alice Burnette; brothers, Bill & Andy; and stepsister, Hunter Price. He is survived by his sister, Marty Wolfe; brother, Paul Seufer; and stepbrother, Richard/Dickie Burnette.
Steve had no secrets. He took the long way home back to God. A visitation will be held at H.D.
