Stephen W. Smith, 61 of Marcy went "to infinity and beyond" on January 10, 2024, after a long illness.
Stephen was born November 6, 1962, to Raymond Smith Sr. and Barbara Henninger in Abington Township, PA. Growing up Stephen split his time between Horsham, PA and Arlington, VT where his love for the outdoors began.
He was a welder by trade and spent his early years working for Braun's Iron Works in Horsham, PA. He married his first love, Lisa Ann Cain in 1983. Their marriage may not have lasted but the love for their children LeeAnn "LA" and Stephen Jr. "Stevie" was never ending. Lisa passed away January 10, 2020.
In the early 90's Stephen worked as a meat cutter and traveled around the Northeast with the late Melvin Bearden. He was a talented wordsmith of nicknames and could have built a career around the creative pranks his friends and coworkers endured.
When life on the road lost its flare he convinced his best friend to start a new adventure with him. Together, he and Mary Kris "Crispy"(Currie) started a family; their "feral tribe". They married in 1998 and raised their children Douglas "Lubby", Bailey "Chipper" and Lucas "Diesel" in Yorkville.
Stephen is survived by his wife and children, his grandchildren Camryn and Joey Barnes, Sage Smith and Gertrude Hynes, mother-in-law Mary "Nana" Currie, his sister Joann "Joey" Genovese, Tony and nephews Justin, Anthony and Aaron, brother William "Lumpy" Kerth and Brother-In-Law Benjamin "Uncle Benny" Currie, Amber and nephew Ehren, nieces Jillian, Avery and Caroline. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Kim, Christopher, Skylar, David, Matthew, Brandy and Lisa's sons Evan and Joshua. Aunts, Uncles and so many cousins and friends who were family will greatly miss him. Uncle Tom, Uncle Donnie, Aunt Gina, Eddie, Scott, Santa's special elf John, gf Tina, Becky, Jordan and Bobbi Jo, Randy and Lara were some of his favorite people. Kiley, Greg, Tanner, Tim, Lucas, Steve, Brendan, Kaylie, Elissa, Drew, Mikey, Joey, Zach, Jordan, Shulsky, Parker and Paisly, he loved you like you were his own. He loved his dogs Remington and "Big Dummy" Poppie, grandpups Blu, Junior and Timber and even his dog-in-law Blarney.
He was predeceased by his father and mother, Raymond and Barbara, father-in-law, Stephen D. Currie, and his brothers Raymond "Pete" Smith and David Smith.
Stephen never mastered the art of "peopling," often saying more with few to no words. He hated talking on the phone, claimed he couldn't text and limited his knowledge of technology to the television remote control.
Some men surround themselves with their riches as a sign of their wealth. Stephen's treasures were the memories he made with his loved ones and his legacy will be the stories he shared with anyone lucky enough to hear them. Epic escapades with his brothers or hunting and fishing adventures with our family and friends always left you wondering if any of the details were embellished but not a single one was fictional. Sharing his love for fishing, hunting and time spent in nature with us was his gift.
Stephen said the water and trees around him were his church and the open air where he felt closest to God. He supported various conservation efforts but the citizen science organization Trout Power, was where he felt like his time and hands-on contribution made the biggest impact.
The family would like to thank the best medical practitioner we've encountered in the Mohawk Valley, Ethan Myers, FNP-C for helping Stephen and saving his life on more than one occasion. Fly Fisherman and friend Kenneth "Dr. Ken" Murphy and the amazing Wynn Interventional Radiology team, Dr. Kashtanova, Dr. Emile Wassel of Kidney & Hypertension Consultants and especially Jessica "Jess" Skutnic, FNP for her knowledge, compassion, advocacy, friendship and love. We are also very appreciative of the care provided by the team of doctors and nurses at Wynn Hospital's 5 East.
Family and friends are invited to join us for a Celebration of Stephen's Life on Saturday, January 20th at the American Legion Leon R. Roberts Post 161, 9550 Depot St. Holland Patent, NY from 1:00-4:00.
