Stephen James Summers, a beloved member of the Coffeyville, Kansas community, passed away peacefully at CRMC on November 6, 2025, at the age of 78, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on March 29, 1947, in San Diego, California, Stephen was the son of James Wallace and Mary Catherine (Patriquin) Summers. His childhood was marked by frequent moves across several states, with his formative years spent in El Paso, Texas, where he completed his education. After high school, Stephen served honorably in the U.S. Army as a cook from 1967 to 1969, receiving his honorable discharge at Fort Bliss in El Paso. Following his military service, he settled in Coffeyville, where he established his roots and began building a life for himself.
Stephen's life took a significant turn when he met Kathy Witt at a local softball field. Their connection was immediate, and they married on June 1, 1974. Together, they made Coffeyville their forever home, welcoming their son, Jim, into their family. Though they faced the heartbreaking loss of their daughter, Amanda Kay, in stillbirth, their bond endured. Kathy lovingly departed this life just two years prior, on November 6, 2023.
Stephen dedicated over 25 years of his career to Western Publishing, later known as Golden Books, where he worked as a forklift operator until its closure. He then contributed his skills to AIW until its closure, a back injury forced him into early retirement. In this new chapter of life, he and Kathy cherished the role of grandparent/caregiver to their grandchildren, Jillian and Carson, providing love and support while their parents worked.
A multifaceted individual, Stephen had a passion for card games, enjoyed watching football and basketball, and occasionally indulged in trips to the casino. He was skilled in home carpentry, always finding new projects to tackle, and he wasn't to shabby of a shade tree mechanic. Additionally, Stephen had a keen interest in bowling and chess, activities he enjoyed with friends and family alike.
To his family and friends, Stephen was a devoted husband to Kathy, an inspiring father to Jim, and an unwavering support to all who knew him. He was a mentor, teacher, and eventually, a best friend to his son. His generosity and kindness were evident in his willingness to help others, making him a cherished presence in the lives he touched.
Stephen is survived by his son, Jim Summers and wife, Shannon; his granddaughter, Jillian and grandson Carson Summers; his brother, Ted Summers; numerous nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends. He rejoins his parents, James and Mary, and his sister, Donna Mary Summers, in eternal rest.
The family invites friends to pay their respects on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave., Coffeyville. Following visitation, cremation will occur, and at a later date, Stephen and Kathy will be laid to rest together at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Stephen James Summers will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love and kindness will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
