Steven Roy Pond was born in Upland, California on October 6th, 1959, four minutes after his lifelong best friend, his identical twin brother, Stanley. After five years, his family moved to Bartlesville, OK where Steve started at Wayside Elementary, attended the Pilgrim Holiness Church, and played little league baseball. In 1970, Steve and his family moved to Midland, TX where he attended Sam Houston Elementary, San Jacinto Jr High, and Goddard Jr High. Steve then graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1977. During his time in Midland, Steve and his family attended First Baptist Church, where Steve and his three brothers often played basketball, attended the youth group, youth choir, and went on summer mission trips.
After graduating from high school, he attended East Texas Baptist College in Marshall, TX for two years. While in college, Steve started his Funeral career working part time at a funeral home. In the Summer of 1979 he transferred to Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, TX where he met the love of his life, Shelley Kim Watts, and made lifelong friends through his fraternity, Kappa Phi Omega.
Steve and Kim were married in Dimmitt, TX on January 2, 1984 at Kim's home church, with his ever-faithful twin brother Stanley by his side as his best man. Steve and Kim then moved from Abilene to Dallas where Steve graduated from mortician school in 1985. They then moved from Dallas to Midland, and eventually landed in Plainview where Steve began his career as a licensed funeral director and had their four children.
In 1994, Steve and Kim moved their family to Tulia, TX. Ever since then, Steve has been a pillar of the community in Tulia, serving families in their deepest time of sorrow and need as they laid their loved ones to rest. In Tulia, you could find Steve involved at church, always attending his children's sporting and recreation events, and playing softball with the Underdogs.
In 2017, Steve received his most treasured title of Pops when his first two granddaughters were born. Since then, you could find Pops doing his favorite things: spending time with his grandchildren, playing golf with his son-in-law or other golf buddies, or holding the hand of his bride as they lived life together. Steve will be remembered as a man who consistently showed up to be the light of Christ to all who crossed his path.
Steve is preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents, Al and Ruth Pond, his father-in-law, Jerry Watts, and his oldest brother, Dale Pond.
Steve is survived by his wife, Kim Pond, of Tulia; his children, Wil Pond and wife Tara, of Plainview; Jerry Daniel Pond of Amarillo, TX; Steffanee Vargas, and husband Tim of Tulia, TX; and Jeffrey Pond, and his fiancee, Delaney of Washington, DC; and his six grandchildren whom he adored; Elliott and Charlie Pond of Plainview, TX, and Severin, Tauren, Millie Kate, and Kit Vargas of Tulia, TX.
Steve is also survived by his twin brother, Stanley Pond and wife Mary; his older brother, Don Pond and wife Tammie; his older sister, Sandy Gillett and husband Mike; and his sister-in-law, Judy Pond. Steve is also survived by his mother-in-law, Carolyn Watts, and his brother-in-law, Jeff Watts and wife Anne.
Steve's wife, four children and their spouses, and his grandchildren are immensely proud of their Pops. He was a man of quiet integrity, deep honor, and steadfast love rare in this world today. Steve shined the love of Christ to friend and stranger, and it's with great honor and deep sadness that the Pond family proclaims that Steve Pond is now at his eternal home, laying his crown before his Savior and King, Jesus Christ.
Pops, you will be missed.
