Obituary published on Legacy.com by Peters Funeral Home - Shafter on Jul. 6, 2023.
Steve "Hoss" Rill had the most infectious laugh and big smile. He was warm, inviting, and always made you feel you were part of his family. He was born in 1951 in
Toledo, Ohio. His mother Margaret always told Steve to do what felt right and never compromise on what you want in life. At her death, he helped make sure his little brother and sister, Richie and Peggy, were taken care of and stayed in the family.
This led him to California where he soon met his one true love, Alannah. They were inseparable and soon after meeting they married in September of 1976. In 1978, they welcomed their first child, a daughter Stephanie Michelle, and in 1979 welcomed their son, Stephen Matthew. They made Shafter their home and had many family and friends in the community.
Steve had a love of gambling and so did his wife Alannah. Steve loved to play video poker and poker. He joked and laughed at the tables and machines and easily made friends with the staff and other patrons. During their time in Shafter, they made several trips to Las Vegas with friends, Alannah's parents, brother, sister, and when their children were old enough, them as well. So, it was no surprise that in 2001 they decided to move to Las Vegas.
In Las Vegas, Steve worked as a Maintenance Supervisor alongside his wife the Senior Living Apartment Manager. Steve thrived in Vegas and retired around the age of 57. In 2014, Steve received news that he had his first grandbaby on her way. So, in 2015, Steve and Alannah decided to move back to California to be with their daughter, Stephanie and son-in-law, George to help care for and raise their only grandchild, Mara.
Steve and Alannah moved next door and a few years later moved in with Stephanie and George where they could be closer and help care for Mara. In the 8 years, they lived together, they all became extremely close, and Mara became Steve's joy. Steve and Mara swam, played, and joked together. They had animal parties, loved to watch movies, and Steve loved his time with Mara and Mara loved her time with grandpa.
In February 2022, Steve lost his wife of 46 years and become extremely sad. But he continued because of his family, especially Mara. Steve and Mara would have conversations and tell stories of grandma. He began swimming more at the gym, and soon met Kathy and Richard. He would tell his daughter about how easy they were to talk to and how he loved sharing stories about Alannah to them. Richard and Steve went to the casino together and had so much fun. And even though this friendship was short, you could see that he truly was happy to have new friends.
In June 2023, Steve was hospitalized due to pneumonia. Everyone thought he would come home. Steve continued to tell his daughter, "I am fighting. I love you all and give Mara hugs for me." And even though he wanted to stay with us, his body was tired. Steve's laugh, smile, friendliness, and joy for life will be greatly missed by all his family and friends, but especially by his daughter, Stephanie, son-in-law, George, and granddaughter, Mara. Rest in Peace Dad. We love you so much.
