Steven James Blumenthal, 63, of Des Moines, IA, passed away at home on January 11, 2026, surrounded by the people he loved.
Born March 22, 1962, Steven was the son of Walter and Joan Blumenthal. He lived life with his whole heart; showing his love through his actions, humor, and willingness to always be there when anyone needed him. He was the one everyone went to for everything; if Papa couldn't fix it, no one could. He was always the voice of reason, the calm amidst the storm, and willing to tell you what you needed to hear.
Steve loved working with his hands and appreciated craftmanship. Woodworking brought out his creativity, motorcycles brought him joy, and his Harley was more than just a bike. Working on his bike was his passion, he spent countless hours refining his stereo's unique sound. He was the proud champion of several motorcycle audio competitions and could be heard coming from a mile away.
Steve enjoyed traveling and sharing experiences with his brotherhood he met through their love of Harley Davidson motorcycles. Seeing new places, spending hours in parking lots listening to music, cooking and eating, allowed them to forge unbreakable bonds. Steve made friends everywhere he went and those friends meant the world to him. He found happiness in simple things: building something meaningful, eating a good meal, taking a ride, and spending time with those he loved.
Steve was passionate about sponsoring and contributing to several motorcycle benefit rides to support families with children facing extraordinary health circumstances, including one of his favorite causes, "Angels for Sam".
Steve built a career to be remembered as a well-respected, trim carpenter and proud owner of SJB Custom Renovations. As proud as he was about his work, Steve would tell you that he only worked so hard because "some people eat to live, I live to eat!" As a Chicago native, he took food seriously from Italian beef sandwiches to Chicago-style thin crust pizza.
Above all else, Steve was devoted to his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Pam Blumenthal (nee Funderburk), his children; Anthony (Jess) Blumenthal, Stephh Botta, Alison (Josh) Luecht, Michael (Tiffani) Williamson, and Travis (Madison) Williamson and his 13 grandchildren; Trevor Campbell, Raul Pimentel, Christopher Ezzio, Karina Pimentel, Joseph Williamson, Carson Williamson, Emily Blumenthal, Jase Williamson, Samuel Williamson, Lucille Williamson, Jake Blumenthal, Jameson Luecht and Kennedy Luecht to whom he was a proud Papa. He was also proud to be a great-grandfather to Carter Campbell.
Steven is also survived by his siblings, Debbie (Mike) Fryzel (nee Blumenthal) and Rich Blumenthal, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jamie Pimentel (nee Blumenthal), and his parents Joan and Walter Blumenthal whom he carried in his heart every day.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held on January 24th, 2026 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 33 located at 2501 Bell Ave. Des Moines, IA 50321 where stories, laughter, and memories will be shared; just as he would have wanted.
Steven leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and memories that will continue to live on through all who knew him.
