Steve Boyd
1959 - 2024
Steven Boyd, a beloved brother, uncle, nephew, and dear friend to many, passed away on September 23 in Columbia, surrounded by his family. He had a passion for gardening and compassion for animals that reflected his nurturing spirit, cultivating beauty and life around him. As a successful businessman, Steve approached challenges with creativity and determination, leaving a mark on both his profession and his community. His warmth, kindness and humor will be deeply missed by his family, friends and community.
From an early age, Steve was characterized by his extraordinary green thumb and passion for plants. His brother, Gary, remembers being careful to walk at least a block behind him on the way home from grade school, in the event that an angry homeowner took chase when Steve was caught taking cuttings from plants in their yard. He graduated from RockBridge High School in 1977, and was known to sport the most dashing clothes, automobiles, and hairstyles of the 1970's.
He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, and also spent some time at the University of Missouri while living at the fraternity house. His fraternity brothers named him "Fern", which eventually became the name of his florist shops in Columbia. "Fernwood Flowers" was owned and operated for many years by Steve and his mother Roberta (Hunt) Boyd, who preceded him in death in 2003.
All three of his nieces grew up at Fernwood Flowers, garnering him lots of attention as they enjoyed the shops and restaurants of downtown Columbia each day. His first born niece re-named him "Nam-Nam" as she was learning to talk, since shortened to the more dignified "Nam", which we still use today.
Steve was known for his unshakable sense of humor and adventurous spirit. He lived life to the fullest, always creating fun and laughter even in the most difficult circumstances. He loved spending time with friends and family, nurturing his garden, and caring for animals. He could often be found at the mulch site, scouting for and adopting plants; around Boone county collecting wayward hives of bees from barns and houses, which he would rehome into beehives in his backyard; and volunteering and working with animals. Everything he touched flourished.
Steve made friends everywhere he went who supported him and cheered him during his fight with cancer. He loved working with his friends, and cherished his wonderful "work families" all over town. He was always game to help--from the floral department (et al) at West Broadway HyVee, to the team at the local animal sanctuary, to the veterinary team at his friend's animal hospital.
He loved life. His resilience, strength, cheerfulness, and humor were an inspiration.
Steve is survived by his brother Gary (Cindy), aunt Kathy (Steve) Delbruegge, and nieces Kaylee, Nellie, and Lillian.
