Steven Lee Clegg

Steven Lee Clegg (AKA Black Hat was born to Neal and Dorothy (Bush) Clegg on April 6, 1950. He passed away on November 15, 2021 quietly in his home with his wife by his side.
Steve attended Haigler Public school through his sophomore year then transferred to Wray High School as he was recruited to play on the WHS football team, after Haigler became unaccredited. After graduating from high school in 1969, Steve attended Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado for one year.
At an early age Steve s love for driving a truck and being a bull-hauler was sparked by Jimmy Smith. Steve rode with him often on some of his trips in the summer time. At the age of 18, Steve worked for Jimmy driving a truck. He also worked for Ohrman Trucking. After that Steve got his own truck and has been a bull-hauler ever since. He would say I can drive with my eyes shut. Steve was quite a cowboy, too. He started practicing his riding and roping skills at a very early age on his pony named Tony. When Steve was about 8, he got bucked off Tony and his pride was hurt. A family friend, Troy Welton, told Steve that the pony just wanted to tease him and see if Steve really could ride him. The next time Steve went to ride Tony he was prepared, and from then on he and Tony got along fine.
Steve was an avid fan of rodeo and roping his whole life. In 1980 he qualified for the Prairie Circuit Finals. Steve married Lonna Sorden on October 14, 1990 and became Shane Sorden s step-father. Rodeo was in their blood. Steve and Lonna met at a roping and enjoyed the sport and competing together.
Steve was preceded in death by his father Neal Clegg, Grandparents Lee and Florence Clegg and Orin and Allie Bush, sister Janet McQuay and cousins Bob Clegg, Gail Harford and Patti Clark. He is mourned by his wife Lonna, his mother Dorothy Clegg, his stepson and wife Shane and Brandy Sorden of Melrose, MT; granddaughter Madison Jenkins and her husband Cooper, and great grandson Haze Jenkins of Big Sandy, MT; brothers-in-law Gene Robinson and wife Marilyn, Jerry Robinson, Shorty and his wife Rachel, sister-in-law Diane Robinson, and a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, and a truck load of bull-hauler friends.
Memorials may be given to Community Hospital Foundation/Hospice 711 East 11th McCook NE 69001.
A Family & Friends Gathering will be held at the Clegg Ranch, 31097 Hwy. 34, Haigler, Nebraska on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 1:00 p.m
Cremation was requested.
Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
