Steven Harry “Steve” Davenport, 75, passed away Monday, August 18, 2025, following a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Born in Chowan County on March 26, 1950, Steve was the son of the late Harry Andrew and Myrtle Harrell Davenport. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Jones Davenport, and infant son, Robert Daniel Davenport, and numerous close friends and family.
If you knew Steve, you knew his laugh; he was always quick with an anecdote or joke and was an entertainer at heart. Steve always had a story– from reminiscing about his childhood to Biblical stories to provide comfort, to spinning yarns about his travels, bragging on his grandchildren or telling tall family tales – he was always one to sit and talk with anyone. He was proud of faith and was a lifelong member of, and later minister for, the First Christian Church in Edenton. He also took pride in his work and was a long-distance owner/operator of his own trucking company for most of his life. Steve traveled across the country in his big truck; making friends wherever he went as well as maintaining several logbooks to cover his excessive hours on the road. He was generous, independent, easy to laugh and smile, and a friend to many. He will be missed, but we know that he is in heaven, talking to lost loved ones and telling stories to anyone who will listen.
Surviving is his son, Bo Davenport (wife, Diane) of Currituck; two daughters, Kelly Davenport Russell (husband, David) of Hertford and Christy Davenport, of wherever the wind takes her. Steve had four grandchildren, Jackson David Russell and Sydney Elyse Russell, both of Hertford, and Alyssa Marlene Davenport and Logan Cruz Davenport, both of Currituck; and two sisters, Cherie Davenport-Martin of Edenton and Cindy Currin of Winston-Salem.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by the Rev. Stanley Nixon. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service on Saturday.
