I´m reading this in May 2024. I am saddened to learn of his passing. I met Steve when
We were both freshman at Berklee College of Music, living across from the 8th Floor
Dorm Room at the old Bryant & Stratton Hotel. Steve was an Applied Music Major and
I was a Music Education Major. I also played guitar. Never forget Steve´s classic orange Chet Atkins Gretcsh Guitar. As a freshman he was already a fine guitarist. He took his
Lessons from the department chairman, William Levitt. I was shocked to learn he took
To the classical guitar deviating from his love for Jazz. He talked about his father all the
Time. He joined his brother Jeff in Boston, to play in the local clubs. Jeff was a fine bass player. Steve was one of the finest musicians I ever met. God bless Steve and his
Family.

I have not seen Steven since we graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, Virginia, in 1973. Growing up in Southside Virginia, Steven seemed very cosmopolitan to me, and he was a friend the last two years of high school. He loved music, and I am glad to learn that he pursued a career in music.

Mr. Eckels was a huge inspiration to my daughter Bettreena Jaeger. He encouraged her in both guitar and singing. He brought her forward to sing and play guitar at various events in kalispell. Much respect. We loved him. Sincerely, Sandy Taylor (also a former/retired teacher from School District 5) love, sandy

I was lucky enough to be a first year student when Steve started teaching at KJHS. I continued in his classes all the way through high school and also took some private lessons from him. His love for music was infectious and is a major reason why I still play guitar to this day. He was a gentle soul and fostered such an awesome, inviting environment in his classes. It goes without saying that he was a phenomenal guitarist. "Sparks From The 7 Worlds" is one of my favorite albums. My deepest condolences to his family. I am really going to miss you Mr. Eckels.

Steve was a friend and professional colleague. He was a giant in the world of guitar education. I will miss so many things about him, particularly his ability to instantly write a poem. He is an incredibly special spirit, and I am thankful for the many times we were able to share and spend time together.

Mr. Eckels was my guitar instructor at Flathead High School (2003-2006), and one of my greatest inspirations for guitar and music. He was an encouraging teacher, dynamic talent and champion of his students. I will never forget and be ever thankful for his influence in my life and the lives of so many others. He will be missed.

Several years ago you taught my son play and to love the classic guitar. It became his life and it became a way for him to express his emotions.
You were a great teacher and mentor. You will be missed forever.
