Steven M. Heckert, 74, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Steven was born on November 29, 1951, in Van Wert, Ohio, to the late James and Lillian (Lintemoot) Heckert.
Steven honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1971 to 1973, receiving an honorable discharge. He was a proud member of American Legion Post #43 in Decatur.
Steven was employed at Eckhart Woodworking in Monroe, Indiana, until his retirement in 2020. In his free time, he enjoyed tinkering with projects around the house, working on puzzles, and building model cars. He also enjoyed relaxing while watching Westerns, a favorite pastime.
Survivors include two sons, Jody and Jericho Heckert; three brothers, Gary (Donna) Heckert of Decatur, Indiana, Don (Linda) Chaffee of Three Rivers, Michigan, and David Heckert of Bluffton, Indiana; two sisters, Tammy Lough and Faye Krick of Decatur, Indiana; sister-in-law, Nancy Heckert of Monroe, Indiana.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Grover, Tim, and Robert Heckert, and his sisters, Jane Baumgartner and Karen Secaur.
In keeping with Steven’s wishes, cremation was held, and burial followed with military honors.
Preferred memorials may be given in Steven’s name to the Monroe Fire Department and mailed to Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, 520 N. 2nd Street, Decatur, Indiana 46733.
