Steven Jubelirer Obituary

DR. STEVEN JAMES JUBELIRER - 76 of Charleston, passed away August 1, 2024.
Dr. Steven James Jubelirer was born December 5, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio as the first child of parents Dr. Richard and Jean Jubelirer. Two years later, his sister, Susan Jubelirer Nesi, was born, and they shared a close bond for more than 50 years, until her death in 2002.
He earned his bachelor's degree in Zoology in 1970 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and went on to medical school at the University of Cincinnati. He completed a fellowship in internal medicine at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, followed by fellowships in hematology and oncology at Boston University, Boston City Hospital, and the Boston VA Hospital.
He came to Charleston in 1980 to practice in a clinical setting while also conducting research and teaching at the Charleston branch of West Virginia University medical school, which at the time was affiliated with CAMC. Soon after his arrival, he met his future wife, Sharon. They married in 1986. He referred to this as "the best thing to happen to me!"
Over more than four decades of practicing medicine in Charleston, he was beloved by patients and respected by colleagues locally and nationally. From 1985 to 1997 he served as Medical Director of the CAMC Cancer Center, now the David Lee Cancer Center.
In addition to a demanding schedule of treating patients, he also taught medical students and published more than 100 scientific papers/abstracts, as well as two books and four book chapters.
He was also an active member of both Temple Israel and B'nai Jacob Synagogue.
Colleagues and friends enjoyed conversing with Steve on a wide range of topics, and he relished sharing jokes and witticisms. He was a proud stepfather of Carol (Josh) Smith and Susan (Jonathan) Jablow, and grandfather of Aaron and Abigail Smith, and Esther Toby and Jeremy Jablow, all of Pittsburgh, PA.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Ahmed Khalid, Donna Tittle, and other medical staff of the David Lee Cancer Center for their exceptional care. Many thanks also to the wonderful medical staff of HospiceCare at CAMC Memorial, and the caring staff of Brookdale Charleston Gardens, especially Lisa Pauley.
Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, August 2, 2024 at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, 1118 Virginia Street, East, Charleston, WV 25301 with Rabbi Victor Urecki officiating. Burial will follow at B'nai Jacob Eternal Home, South Charleston.

I have a memory of Steve from the 1st week he came to Charleston, and sauntered into my bookstore.
His love for books was the beginning of our friendship,
which has remained close
throughout the years. sharing books was a continuing joy for us.
we also shared a love for music, and participated together in orchestra &
other performing events.
In a professional capacity
Steve was king of the hill.
His manner, skill, and expertise was "top notch."
Steve's ability to combine
and intertwine His life's work
with His life's purpose
( which was helping people)
is more than notable.
Proud and honored to have Steve as my friend.
rest in power& peace

How to define the dimensions of Steve...Always curious. Interested. Patient. Kind. Inclusive. Introspective. Steve was a man of science and practitioner of healing. But also a world traveler who set foot on all but one continent on earth...Antarctica escaped his quest. A lover of music. Violin and piano were his fortes. Tennis another. And his love of art filled his office with stacks of the beautiful landscape paintings he embarked on in his lifetime.
And the many books...medical...biographies....more books than humanly possible creating a maze of "stacks" throughout of his Charleston home...Peppered with bookmarks and notes. And his writings. He made many presentations at his beloved Anvil Club.
So how to speak about our departed friend Steve...So many interests and depths to that wonderful man of science and art that we´ve been gifted by knowing him. He made every day a "magical day" for others. From Cincinnati to Madison to Boston to DC to Charleston, he gave us a front row seat to a life of dedication and goodness.
So difficult to say goodbye.
He was (and will be) a cherished friend forever.

I first became a patient of Dr Jubelirer's in 1989 and through the years, his medical care, compassion and kindness changed how I saw myself as a cancer patient. I knew I could trust him. He was also the most intelligent and interesting man and no matter the topic we discussed he seemed to have a book on it that he'd love to share. He has been in my prayers every single day for years and I'll miss knowing he's here. The world was a better place with him in it. My prayers will now be for his family and all who loved him. Rest In Peace dear Dr Jubelirer.

I worked at Medical Center Pharmacy years ago when the Cancer Center was located in that same building. Dr. Jubelirer use to come in and buy things and was the kindest person. He has helped so many people and was so loved by many. Although I didn´t see him after I left my job, I will always remember him being a charming, kind, friendly human being that lived his job and helping others. May he rest in God´s loving arms. Your memory will be eternal.
