Steven F. Kentner, 79, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2025, in Abilene, Texas. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Steve was born on March 19, 1946, in Newton, Iowa, to Donald Edwin Kentner and Ona Pearl Reynolds-Kentner. Steve attended Country School before completing education in Leon, IA. He spent most of his life in Southern Iowa before moving to Central Nebraska then spent the last 7 years in San Angelo, Texas. He grew up with a deep appreciation for nature, which remained a central part of his life. An avid outdoorsman, Steve found joy in fishing, hunting, horses, and simply being outside, especially near lakes or in the mountains.
He spent many dedicated years working for Decatur County before becoming a Jack of All Trades. Whether it was residential construction or coaching softball, Steve never shied away from learning a new skill or taking on a new title. Known for his kind heart and quiet strength, Steve cherished time spent with family, friends, and especially his beloved grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Papa."
Steve was a true animal lover, a passionate sports fan, and enjoyed cheering on his children from the sidelines as they played. He was a dedicated Kansas City Chiefs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He had several different vehicles throughout his life he cared greatly for, his ole red Dodge pickup in recent years. He was also known for his love of travel, specifically his elk hunting trips in the mountains and family trips to Branson, MO. He found joy in cooking several different cuisines but in recent years his legendary smoked meats have taken the spotlight-particularly his homemade beef jerky & ribs.
Steve is survived by his children: Kara Kentner of Austin, TX; Aaron Kentner (Elisha Kentner) of San Angelo, TX; and Alex Kentner (Molly Kentner) of Hastings, NE. He is also survived by his brothers: Bob Kentner of Humeston, IA; and Tom Kentner (Jeanette Kentner) of Elliott, IA. He leaves behind his treasured grandchildren: Londyn, Gracelyn, and Austyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Sheryl Kentner.
Steve's life was one of quiet generosity, enduring love, and deep connection to nature and family. He will be missed by all that knew him and remembered always.
