Steven Robert Kimmel was born to Robert and LaVerne (Downer) Kimmel of Wilmot, SD, on December 2, 1956. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Wilmot High School in 1975. Following high school, Steven left for Las Vegas, NV, with his guitar and ended up staying in that area for the rest of his life.
Steve entered the Sheet Metal Workers apprenticeship program and became a life-long member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 88. He worked for Pahor Mechanical, later becoming MMC, until his retirement. Beginning as a journeyman, Steve later became Vice President of the company. Along with being a proud member of the Local 88, he also served on the Union Board and as an instructor for the apprenticeship program. He also served as president of the SMACNA (Sheet Metal Air Conditioning Contractors National Association) of southern Nevada.
Steve had a love for music from a very early age and a natural knack for entertaining. In addition to his day job, he played and sang with his bands in the Las Vegas area.
On May 9, 1986, he was united in marriage with Mary Ann Frahman. They lived in Las Vegas for a few years and then built a home in Overton, NV, where they raised their two children. The move also allowed him to return to his agricultural background and raise alfalfa, cattle, and horses.
If he wasn’t working, Steve was on his horse working cows, tinkering with an old tractor, playing with his grandchildren, or helping a neighbor with a project. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mesquite, NV.
After retiring, Steve and Mary Ann were able to spend more time with family and friends in the Wilmot, SD, area at their second home. Most recently, he served on the Wilmot Care Center Board.
Per his request, his body has been donated for medical research to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD
Steve is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; children: Cody (Lani) Kimmel of Reno, NV; Lauren Kimmel of Overton, NV; and Nathan (Adriana) Widick of Las Vegas, NV; beloved grandchildren: Colton, Remi, and Lyvia Kimmel, and Weston Whitmore; his mother, LaVerne Kimmel of Wilmot, SD; sisters: Nancy Kimmel (Mickey Swayze) of Wilmot, SD; and Peggy (Curt) Mundt of Agar, SD; sister-in-law, Deborah Frahman of Las Vegas, NV; aunts: Beverly Sawinsky of Aberdeen, SD; and Anita (Arlan) Holm of Fargo, ND; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Kimmel; mother and fathers-in-law: Lawrence and Jeanette Frahman, and Perry Jones; grandparents: Louis and Lydia Kimmel; and Thoralf and Esther Dahl; uncle, Lloyd E. Sawinsky; and sister-in-law, Deanna Frahman.
