Obituary for Steven M. Lay

July 23, 1969 – July 25, 2025

With sadness we announce the passing of Steven M. Lay, 56 years old on July 25, 2025, in Vancouver, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on July 23, 1969, in Ottawa, Steve brought intelligence, wit and energy into the lives of all who knew him. His strength and resolve in the face of terminal illness were a testament to the determined spirit he carried throughout his life.

Steve was an English Literature graduate from the University of Ottawa who used his intellectual and social skills to advocate for his community. Steve believed deeply that change happened through connection, action and advocacy. Whether helping to build cob homes, running twice for political office in British Columbia or simply being a loyal friend, he approached the world with the conviction that one person's passion and persistence could make a real difference.

Steve is survived by his parents, Colin and Marjorie, his brother Andrew, who was with Steve as he transitioned to his next journey, Andrew's wife Xin Hui Su, and their three children, Kai Su, Hang Su and Yue Su.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone at St Paul's Hospital who cared for Steve with empathy and kindness; and to his longtime friends Becky, with whom Steve shared their beloved dog Noche, and Tony, who both supported him through his final journey with love, humour and compassion.

Steve loved music. He was a collector and avid listener, as well as a classically trained pianist. A passage of the song 'Ripple' written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia, of whom Steve was a great admirer, illuminates our thoughts of him:

"There is a road, no simple highway

Between the dawn and the dark of night

And if you go, no one may follow

That path is for your steps alone."

Steve was my friend since I was 8 years old and just moved to Ottawa. He was thoughtful, caring and a true original. He was an active, interested and deeply involved person. He could, and would, discuss any number of topics or ideas, and helped me often to understand different points of view. We traveled as young men to several places and he helped shape my view of the world. I always came away from conversations with Steve feeling more energized and informed, whether I agreed with him or not. It will be a large void to not have his counsel and I will miss him tremendously. Condolences to the Lay family and all of us who knew and loved him. Cheers to our friend Steve
