Steven McKinstry

Steven Carl McKinstry, a dedicated and loving individual, departed this world on October 27, 2024, leaving behind a legacy enriched by his profound kindness and an indomitable spirit that touched the lives of all who had the fortune to know him. Born on May 5, 1946, in Knoxville, IA, Steven embraced life with an infectious energy that often manifested as a roaring, contagious laugh, a true testament to his vibrant personality.
Devoting two decades of his life to the United States Marine Corps, Steven embodied the ethos of his military training. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he exemplified courage and commitment during his service, which concluded in 1985. With the unique distinction of having served in varied locales including Virginia, Hawaii, Japan, and Coronado, he carried the mantra of "once a Marine, always a Marine" close to his heart.
After his honorable service, Steven transitioned to a career as a correctional officer for ten years and later served as a correctional counselor at the Newton Correctional Facility, impacting the lives of many within the system. Alongside his professional pursuits, he achieved academic success, earning a bachelor's degree from Shaman University in Hawaii. His thirst for knowledge and betterment knew no bounds, setting an inspiring example for his family and peers.
Family was the cornerstone of Steven's existence. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn McKinstry, of Newton, IA, whose unwavering support and love he cherished deeply. With Steven's previous marriage with Jessie Bernice Hill they had Brain (Deanna) Mckinstry, of Newton, IA and Bonnie (Richard) Hawkins of Baxter, IA. Carolyn McKinstry also brought Micheal (Hanh) Shaffer, of Spring, TX, into their beautifully blended family of pure love and compassion. He also is survived by 9 grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren and his brother Jim McKinstry of Newton, IA. Furthermore, he had many nieces, nephews and cousins. Each of them is a vital threat in the fabric of his life, woven together with shared experiences and cherished memories.
Steven's passions extended beyond his professional life. He was an enthusiastic participant in the Newton Community Theatre, where he delighted audiences with his acting prowess. In his leisure hours, he indulged in the great outdoors, expressing his love for fishing and hunting. His creativity flourished through various hobbies including making banners, cups, and wood burning, and he was known to plant trees, honoring the memory of lost loved ones--an act that reflected his deep-seated compassion.
Among his proudest accomplishments, Steven was particularly honored to have been inducted into the Iowa Music Hall of Fame, a recognition of the remarkable contributions he made as an MC with 8 Track. This achievement spoke volumes about his commitment to the arts and the joy he brought to others through his talent.
Steven Carl McKinstry navigated his journey through life with an unwavering kindness and an unquenchable zest for living. He will be remembered not only for the roles he played--be it as a Marine, a correctional officer, a husband, a father, or a friend--but also for the love and laughter he shared generously with those around him.
