Steven Merencky Obituary

Steven J. Merencky passed away on August 1, 2025, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was 87 years old.

He was born on July 10, 1938. "Big Steve" attended Collinwood High School, where he distinguished himself as a talented wrestler, placing fourth in the state.

In 1962, he joined the Cleveland Police Department, where he served honorably for 28 years. Upon retirement, he became a bus driver for Euclid City Schools.

Steve was a man of faith who attended Mass every Sunday as a devoted Roman Catholic.

He shared nearly six decades of marriage with Ursula (née Zagore), his beloved wife of 59 years. Steve was the loving father of Steve Merencky, Christine (Paul) Papageorge, and Michael Merencky. He found immense pride in being a grandfather to Jackson Papageorge.

Steve was a dear brother to JoAnn Lisowski, Don (Sin-ye) Merencky, and Marilyn (Ed) Jones. He is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Anna Merencky, as well as his late brother Robert (Eleanor) Merencky. He was blessed with many nieces and nephews.

He was a formidable presence on the racquetball court and enjoyed countless rounds of golf with friends. Steve followed the Cleveland Browns and Guardians through thick and thin.

Steve was a loyal friend whose trustworthiness earned him lasting bonds throughout his life. He found happiness in being there for others-his community, friends, and especially his family.

Steve's legacy is one of service, strength, humor, and love. A Viewing will be held on August 11, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Divine Word 8100 Eagle Road followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Private Interment at All Souls Cemetery.

A Father and a Friend
A Legacy of a Man Named Steven Merencky

You were a Father to three of your own
but others saw you as a Father Figure
even when their own parents had passed away
You cultivated in life many a Forever Friend
You were a man who truly had 9 lives and
even when you were hurting or sick
you tried your best to help others
Especially taking care of your wife
Cooking for your family
Helping others with Projects
Even those lives you may have touched
for only a few moments
you had a Great Effect on
You always had your sense of humor
from the Pea joke that became the pee joke
or answering the phone County Morgue
You were there for your brothers and sisters
You were there for your friends and former
partners on the Police force
You taught us a lot whether
it be on a Basketball Court,
a Racquetball court, or sitting by your
side watching TV.
You went from being a Cleveland Police officer
to a Euclid School bus driver
You exhibited many of your 9 lives on the Police
Force, you battled, and fought for three years
in the fight of your life, but you still tried
to do everything you could to help and care for
your family and friends
your name and the life you lived are forever
engraved and engrained in so many places
Our name was mispronounced so many times
it is spelled CKY but pronounced SKY or SKI
when you were hosting a gathering
and wanted people to leave
you would put on your PJs
You dressed up as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny
and did so much to give back to the communities
you lived in, or giving donations to charities
you made it in this life thru 87 years
were married to your wife for nearly 60 years
somehow you managed to have two children that
were 3 years apart but were born one day apart
that was one helluva accomplishment
though you missed the trifecta your 3rd born
came 315 days too early LOL
you even made a couple
Furever friends along the way
Lola the Vizsla
and Mimi the Dachshund Mix
You were a Father to 3 kids
But a friend to a Great many More
A Grandfather to one
Your name will forever be enshrined
in the hearts of so many
Stephen Joseph Merencky
You will forever
be Remembered

It was a pleasure working with Steve at the school bus yard. He was always funny and a very nice man. We would buy football squares and play lottery games to make our work day more fun.
