Steven Robert Nelson, 74, passed away on November 15, 2025. Born on June 26, 1951, in Watertown, South Dakota, he was the son of Paul and Elsie Ann Nelson, and grew up in Garden Grove, California, alongside his siblings Jeff and Leigh.

Steve built a large and loving family, including his children Kellie and Kyle, his wife Carol, and many step-children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He carried his family's stories with pride and affection, and they were the steady center of his life.

Steve dedicated more than three decades to law enforcement. Called to the profession because he "hated bullies" and believed deeply in protecting and serving those who couldn't defend themselves, he began his career with the Garden Grove Police Department before joining the Olympia Police Department in 1980. He rose through the ranks to sergeant, lieutenant, commander, and ultimately Deputy Chief, retiring in August 2016. Even after retirement, he remained closely connected to the people and department he cared so deeply about.

Those who worked with Steve remember him as a steady, compassionate, and quietly influential leader. His constant "Thanks for being here" became a grounding reminder of his respect for the people around him. He encouraged officers to choose optimism over pessimism when interacting with the public-an expectation rooted in his belief that fairness, empathy, and dignity should guide every decision.

To his family, Steve was the dependable "go-to guy," the person everyone called for advice, perspective, or a dose of humor. His kids remember his signature "Steve'isms," the kind of responses that became family classics. On long road trips, when asked, "When will we be there?" he'd answer, "Depends where you start"-a line that both confused and amused them. When a waiter offered a refill of something he didn't want, he'd deadpan, "No thanks, I'm driving," even if it was just coffee. Those dry, perfectly timed quips became a part of who he was.

Above all, Steve loved his family deeply and unconditionally. His stories about his parents, siblings, children, and grandchildren revealed the heart beneath his command presence-a man who cared fiercely, showed up consistently, and believed in doing right by people.

Steve's passing leaves a profound void for his family, friends, and the Olympia Police Department. His legacy-rooted in service, humility, fairness, and genuine care-will continue to live on in the many lives he touched. May he rest in peace.
