Steven Craig Richey, 61, born on June 1, 1964, was called home to be with the Lord on July 14, 2025, in Columbus, Georgia, surrounded by his loving children. A man of unwavering faith, infectious laughter, and boundless imagination, Steven lived a life dedicated to inspiring and uplifting those around him.

Born to John Richey and the late Glenda Blackwell, Steven grew up in Gadsden, Alabama where his vibrant spirit and love for life took root. For 36 years, he shared a beautiful marriage with the love of his life, his late wife, Jennifer Richey, whose memory he cherished deeply. Steven was a fighter, marked by strength and resilience, with a passion for writing, reading, science fiction, and bringing joy through his silly sense of humor. His ability to make others laugh and feel loved was a gift that touched countless lives. His greatest gift was his love for the Lord.

Left to carry his legacy are his children, Benjamin (Amanda), Heather (Ryan), Brittany (Jaron), Christian (Ashley), and Krystal; his grandchildren, Shane(Maria), Shyanne, Kayleigh, Kairon, and Brielynn; his siblings: Rodney (Yvette) and Vance; his father, John Richey; his Step mom, Dianne; and many cherished loved ones from near and far.

The family will receive friends and family at Graham Funeral Home 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, VA 23320 on Tuesday, July 22, from 5-7 PM for a public viewing, with a service to be held at Freedom Fellowship Church, 836 Regency Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23454 Wednesday July 23, at 11 AM, followed by a reception upstairs. Steven's life will be celebrated with the same joy and faith he embodied. To leave a condolence to the family please visit Grahamfuneralhome.com

He will be laid to rest at Riverside Memorial Park next to his Jenny bear.

The beautiful obituary and the joyful photo-displays on social media that celebrate the sweet soul of Steven Richey truly touch the heart. His children and family surely have a most profound pride in Steven as an incredible person. I am Steven's 2nd-cousin, Jeffrey Choron, of Muscle Shoals, Alabama and alumnus of the University of Alabama. Steven and I share the same great-grandparents ( John Belia Blackwell and Mattie Laura "Mimi" Ramey Blackwell). It was during my early teenage years that I had some brief time with Steven, Rodney, and Vance. Our dealings with ALS seem parallel, as my beloved wife, Flora, was diagnosed with Bulbar-type ALS in December 2022. We found support regularly at the ALS Clinic of Crestwood Hospital in Huntsville, AL. My beloved took her last breath at the age of 60 on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Yesterday, was the funeral (July 20, 2025) in Sheffield, Alabama. One of the prayers at her funeral was an especially sweet one authored by Abdu'l-Baha:

"O my God! O Thou forgiver of sins, bestower of gifts, dispeller of afflictions. Verily, I beseech Thee to forgive the sins of such as have abandoned the physical garment and have ascended to the spiritual world. O my Lord! Purify them from trespasses, dispel their sorrows, and change their darkness into light. Cause them to enter the garden of happiness, cleanse them with the most pure water, and grant them to behold Thy Splendors on the loftiest mount."

We have to continue to overcome the challenges of ALS, the most mysterious and devastating disease, by supporting the efforts to learn more about ALS so that help can be discovered and made available for those affected. I certainly will try to do my part in behalf of my dear wife, Flora, and my brave 2nd-Cousin, Steve.
Roll Tide.
