Steven C. Speaks

Steven C. Speaks, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025, in Alpena, MI, due to complications of Alzheimer's. Born on September 2, 1943, in Mt. Vernon, OH, Steve was a beacon of knowledge and kindness to the Alpena community, touching the lives of many with his selfless nature and gift of gab.
Steve was the cherished son of the late Maxwell and Dolores (Forsythe) Speaks. He grew up in a loving family alongside his sisters, Jackie Crouch and Charlene Beech, who preceded him in death, and his surviving sisters, Mary Allen and Marceline Speaks. His life was enriched by his devoted wife, Ann of 61 years. Together, they raised a beautiful family, including their children Ray "Skip" Speaks (Mary Wachowski), Stephanie (Donnie) Gosselin, Scott (Jenny) Speaks, Heidi (Brian) LaCross, and Sarah (Mark) Krans. He was preceded in death by his daughter in-law Suni Speaks. Steve's legacy continues through his 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews, who will fondly remember his guidance and love.
An accomplished scholar, Steve earned his teaching degree from Marietta College where he also shone as a star left-handed pitcher, and later his master's from Central Michigan University. His passion for education led him to a distinguished 33-year career as a Math Teacher at Alpena High School. There, he was not only a respected educator but also the yearbook advisor and a dedicated coach for baseball, track, and football. He extended his teaching talents to Alpena Community College, where he continued to inspire students with his love for mathematics.
Steve's voice was well-known in the community as the host of the Sportsmen Report radio show. His commitment to local traditions was evident through his heavy involvement in the Brown Trout Festival from its inception. Steve's love for sports was matched by his passion for the outdoors; he was the founder of the hunt and fish club at Alpena High School, a skilled angler, and an enthusiastic photographer. His ability to capture the beauty of nature and the thrill of the catch was unparalleled.
Family was the cornerstone of Steve's life. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, whether it was teaching his grandchildren to fish, sharing stories, or simply enjoying the company of his family. His selfless nature was evident in every aspect of his life, from the classroom to the playing field, and most importantly, at home. In his own words: "This is Steve Speaks, I hope you will always enjoy, protect, and preserve the Great Outdoors."
Family will receive friends on September 10, 2025 from 6pm-8pm at McWilliams Funeral Home for a time of sharing. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial donation to Hospice of Michigan or the American Alzheimer's Association.
