Steven Thompson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home and Crematory - Roswell on Jan. 2, 2026.
Steve Thompson, age 64, of Roswell, New Mexico, passed away unexpectedly after a short illness on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Casa Maria Healthcare Center. His funeral services will be held at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10 a.m. with viewing one hour prior to the service and burial immediately after the service at South Park Cemetery.

Steve was born in Huron, SD, on August 22, 1961, to Roland and Shirley (Quill) Thompson. He graduated from Huron High School in 1979 and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota in May 1983. Steve managed Kmart stores in Wisconsin, a variety of restaurants in Kansas and Albuquerque, NM, ending his career in manufacturing. His son Anthony was born in Albuquerque in 1988.

Steve retired to San Diego, California, at age 51. Later, he returned to New Mexico to live out his retirement years with the love of his life, Dorothy 'Dot' Steenholdt and her son, Neil.

Steve's mind was always working, thinking about how to make things better. He enjoyed solving all types of puzzles, including Rubik's Cube. He also enjoyed day trading, creating a 2-cent solution that suggests investing 2-cents per day to build wealth and earn freedom from 'working for a living' – with the goal of work becoming something one likes to do; instead of 'has to' do.

He and Dot enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and starting their days with morning devotions. As challenges arose in his life or the world, he would say 'there is never enough love in this world and that we should be kind and love one another.'

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, uncle and aunt Donald and Betty Lou Strand, uncles David (Rosemary), John and Jerry Quill.

Grateful for having shared his life are Dot and her children: Neil, Tracy and Serena, grandchildren and great grandchildren; his son Anthony Thompson of Oregon; sister Kim (Rob) Rieger; stepmother Donna Thompson, stepbrothers Mike (Tammy) Dramstad and Matthew Dramstad all of Huron, SD; nephews Jacob Rieger, Gabriel (Summer) Rieger, Thorn Dramstad, Thacher Dramstad. He is also survived by aunts Joan and Barb Quill of Wisconsin and many cousins.

In lieu of flowers, any memorials will be donated to a charity.
