Obituary of Steven Alden Walls
Steven Alden Walls, Otter Creek and Bar Harbor (1941 – 2024) was affectionately known as SAW passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024.
Dad was born in Otter Creek to Austin and Irma (Dorr) Walls on August 7, 1941. Dad was a veteran of the cold war and served in the Army from July 1960 to July 1963. He spent all his service time in Germany and saw the building of the wall separating East and West Germany. He lived long enough to see the wall come down.
Upon Dad's return to Maine, he re-connected with a woman he knew from Bar Harbor who would later become his wife, Rita M. (Leathers) Hallett. Mom and dad celebrated 58 years married on the 8 th of November.
Dad became a volunteer firefighter for the town of Bar Harbor upon returning from Germany; he served the residents of Bar Harbor for over 33 years in his capacity as a firefighter. He was a roof and ladder man which was an appropriate duty in relation to his work as a painter for many years. Dad fondly remembered being in honor guard of the fire department, and participating in many 4 th of July celebrations.
Dad was an avid hunter and would spend the month of November with his brother, Austin Walls, and best friend Homer Lawford, along with his sons, and later his
grandsons as they joined the troupe. The troupe waxed and waned in numbers as the years came and went, but the core group could be found in the woods of Ornville, Maine.
He had a wonderful, dry sense of humor and quick wit and could be found on the dance floor of any event he attended. He was a marvelous dancer and enjoyed sharing his
skills with others. Dad rediscovered his love of woodworking after he retired. He would often set up his wares to sell to tourists but would give his artwork to his beloved family and friends.
Dad is survived by his loving wife Rita, his five children, Kevin (Lisa) Hallett, Trenton, Karen (Ken) Hartt, Franklin, Kelton Hallett, Bar Harbor, Karl Hallett, Bar Harbor, Kristine (Josh) Poulin, Readfield. Grandchildren, Angela (Tony) White, Jeremy (Priti) Hartt, Kevin Hallett, Matthew (Stephanie) Hallett, Uriah (Julia) Hallett, Ezra Hallett, Delia (Keith) Robinson, Micah Hallett, and five great-grandchildren.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, Austin and Irma (Dorr) Walls, and brothers Austin and Glen Walls. He is survived by sisters, Nancy Mitchell, Ellen Ward, brothers, Robert (Bobby) Walls and Charles (Chickie) and Karen Ward. He is further survived by other relatives and many friends. His quiet wisdom and kindness will be missed by many.
Per Dad's wishes, there will not be a memorial service. He will be interred in Otter Creek, Maine.
